Dr. Atkins resting after cardiac arrest
About 5 weeks ago I completely cut out fast food, started eating fruit for snacks, and said 'goodbye' to soda. My only real excercise remained an hour or so of rollerblading every other day.
Lost 11 lbs already, maybe another 5 to go and I'm where I want to be.
No need for fancy, convoluted diets... just eat right.

atkins works for some and doesnt for others.
I could never do atkins.. I just dont find sitting down to the table and eatting just pure meat, appatizing (spelling ya i sux). I like my fruits and veggies.
Key is to cut back breads/sodas/sugers/fastfood....just eat right and do exercise and you will lose weight =P

Hike about 6 miles a day, if I drink soda it's diet now (no carbs) but mostly water. Used to eat a lot of fruit but apparently the suger in them can add up so I've gone over to carrots and cellery.
No fast food, no fries going on 2 years now (with occasional lapses).
Drink whisky on the rocks , no more jack and cokes.
I wasn't a big guy to begin with but I'm startting to get the abs I wanted. I always did a fair amount of ab work but now with the low carbs they are actaully comeing thru.

I think that carrots actually have a fair bit of sugar, FYI. However, they're GREAT sources of fibre.
IIRC, whisky is pretty high in carbs and sugar, but I'm not sure how it compares to other boozes. People on the Atkins always seem to drink vodka.

Gotta have a drink night, if you eat right there's always room for a beer + pizza night.
As far as the sugars in fruit go, of course too much can be a bad thing. That even applies to water, believe it or not. But instead of grabbing for the cookies or chips after lunch and in the evening, I have an apple or pear, etc.
I was eating decent portions for meals, but still steadily gaining some weight mostly because of the soda and little snacks. It's amazing how much that crap adds up, 4+ sodas a day is actually disgustingly bad for you.

Next to the load found in beer I'll take the suger in whisky. More bang for the buck and no beer gut.
I'll look into the comparison of wisky vs. vodka though, might be worth the effort.

Generally, 1 jigger (1 1/2 ounces) of liquor (gin, rum, vodka and whiskey) contains:
97 calories
0 gm protein
0 gm fat
0 gm carbohydrate
14 grams alcohol
Dosne't look like any one booze has it over any other. Wine you can drink more for the same calories but not as much of a kick.

Miller Lite has half the carbs of Bud Lite!
Here's the conclusions I have come to after spending a few months trying to lose weight.
The real key is exercise I think. There's nothing bad and tons of things that are good about exercise. Make time for it.
Stay away from sugar. The less you eat the less you will crave it in my experience. Staying off carbs seems to make it easier to stay off sugar as well, but maybe that's just me. Fruit is better for you than refined sugar by a long shot, but it's still sugar so you can't just go nuts on it. Berries are lower in calories than most fruit (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) but they are expensive as hell most of the time.
Drink diet Coke. Regular Coke drinkers hate it generally, I used to be one of those people, but if you just buy a case of it and drink it, you get used to it pretty fast. I think I like it better than regular coke now. It's better to just drink water, but a lot of times I really want something sweet and diet coke does the trick. Some people say aspartame will kill you, but everything either causes or cures cancer so I don't worry about it. I only drink 1 or maybe 2 a day though. If you're a 12-pack a day pop drinker you might want to read up about it. I really like cranberry raspberry diet snapple too.
Carbs can be good in the morning, especially if you're going to be doing some physical activity. If you have to eat carbs, try to eat whole grain stuff. If you buy brown bread, make sure it's really whole grain. Definitely stay away from carbs in the evenings or if you don't do any physical activity though.
Fat has a lot of calories. It's bad because it has a lot of calories, not because it's fat. The good thing about it is that it's filling (meat and cheese). I actually eat a lot of meat and cheese, but you have to keep in mind that it's high in calories and not go nuts on it. Eating lots of "low-fat" cookies that are packed with sugar and carbs isn't a diet plan, but I don't think anybody every lost a lot of weight on the "half pound of bacon a day" diet either.
The "pizza and beer" day is a good idea. I eat whatever the hell I want to on Sunday and it really makes it easier to resist the urge to eat crap if you think "I can have that on Sunday" instead of thinking you can never eat doughnuts again or whatever it is you are in the mood for. By Sunday I have usually forgotten about it but it helps resist the urge to eat crappy food during the week.
Anything is ok in small doses once in a while.
Just a few things I have heard that have worked out well for me this summer. Have lost about 30 pounds since May but I still have at least 30 to go before I'm where I want to be. I attribute most of it to exercise (bike riding 4-6 days a week).
FWIW IANA Nutritionist YMMV

Just drinking more water and watching what I eat i.e. not loading up on one meal, and about 30 minutes of working out a night has done wonders for me. I'm down to 170 from 200 from only 3 months.....

Wow ingnorant people, aspartame is made with a combination of two Amino Acids (what makes up protein). Link for you to read up on took all of 2 second to find it too http://www.aspartame.org/
want more?
http://www.nutrasweet.com/professionals/index.asp
| Quote: | How is aspartame handled by the body?
Aspartame is made from two protein components - aspartic acid and phenylalanine, as the methyl ester.
|
Another Quote from: http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?objectid=939FEA9C-5D4C-45C7-8CFE806028FFDF31
| Quote: | Aspartame causes MS, lupus and tumors
It's next to impossible to trace the source of most medical myths, but a woman who believes that the artificial sweetener aspartame causes everything from obesity to manic depression to multiple sclerosis is behind this medical myth. This woman believes that all the research showing that aspartame is harmless is tainted because it's funded by the company that makes aspartame. Even worse, she says, there's a conspiracy by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and others to keep this information from the public.
Obviously, if you believe the FDA is corrupt, it's hard to disprove her claims. But the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Mayo Clinic, among others, have rebutted her arguments.
It is true that a 1997 study linked aspartame with an increase in brain tumors. But Mayo Clinic doctors believe that the study points to the need for more research and doesn't prove aspartame causes brain tumors or is responsible for the increase in tumors. The incidence of brain tumors has been on the rise since the 1970s, before the sweetener was approved. This rise in brain tumors may be due to better detection of tumors because of improved technology.
One caution: People with the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU) and those with allergies to the ingredients in aspartame should avoid it.

atkins is BAD for you. not only will you probobly not keep the weight off cuz lets face it, you arent gonna be eating atkins shit for the rest of your life, but the excessive protein intake that is part of atkins is terrible for your body.
anyone who follows a diet simply doesnt have the willpower to exercise and eat properly which is by far the best way to lose weight and keep it off
in 5 years i bet 95% of the people using atkins have the weight back plus some

noticed how I used the word "program" in place of "diet"?
I don't "diet" I have a diet that makes up my lifestyle.
I have incorperated the philosophy of Atkins which basically lowers carbs overall.
I also execsize regularly. What I have noticed that my normal activite coupled with reduced carbs and more protien has had the addtional effect of reducing what little fat I had.
The only thing it has done for me is incorperate a new element to my normal routine. And in the process I get to eat bacon.. just no more pancakes, muffins, french toast or dougnuts.
It's working fine for me but I'm not religiouse about it, just accutely more aware of where the carbs are hideing out.

Banzai you should check out "the southbeach diet"
it is very similar to atkins but different in that it doesn't count carbs
atkins basically says unlimited fat but ultra low carb
southbeach says good carbs and good fat(but still low carb since all bad carbs are sugary as well it limits saturated fats but good fats like oliveoil ect are in)
what it does is look at the foods that are low on the glycemic index which is basically if you eat something how does it affect your bloodsugar level which then causes insulin levels to elevate which then converts bloodsugars to fat.
As i said its very similar to atkins but what i've found so far is its easier to adhere to in the long term and if you lead a lifestyle that lends it self to eating out its easier to work with as well
I lost 50pounds on the atkinds but then travelled on holidays for 1 month and put 20pounds back on fromliving at restaurants and beer everynight..I've lost 10 again on the southbeach and overall i find i'm more satisfied with where its going ..just something to consider if your a low carber...
Heres a GREAT southbeach mashed potatoes substitute reciepe
After not eating potatoes for months these taste ssooooo good ..not quite mashed but you'll be surprised how close they are.
2 cups cauliflower florets
1/2 ounce I can't believe its not butter
1/2 ounce half and half cream
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
nuke cauliflower till its soft
add rest of ingrediants and blend in a food procesor till smooth
Slap em beside a steak and some salad and you got a great low carb meal
oh its about 10g carbs with 6g fiber btw

lol wtg lerra you really proved me wrong!
The temporary weight loss some people achieve through Atkins is good sure, but the chances of keeping it off are slim and the excessive protein intake is in fact bad for your body. The only reason you lose weight in the Atkins is because of the energy deficit created by the types of foods you consume. Most of the initial weight you lose is due to dehydration anyways, not fat loss.
Excessive protein intake is bad because:
1) Excess protein is not used efficiently in the body and it places too much metabolic stress on the liver and especially the kidneys trying to break it down
2)Extracts too much calcium from body
3)Leads to dehydration because of the excessive ketone production to break down the protein
4) Not enough carbs (complex carbs especially) for healthy bpdy long term
5) you also dont get the benefits from carbs and fruits and such that your body needs long term to stay healthy
Believe what you want but the only way to lose weight long term is to burn more calories then you consume.
