doesn't say a damn thing about what the technology is or how it works.
1 cent per kW-hr, what is that 1 cent paying for? i.e. what is the fuel for this thing?

Jack's head got trapped in some memory device of the ancients and their entire knowledge was uploaded into his brain. That's when he used a ZPM to get to the Ascard home world. Episode title was "The Fifth Race" from a couple seasons ago.
I don't remember all episodes this well heh, but I liked that one.

That was in season 3 I think, and the ZPM's were introduced til season 7 or so?

When Jack did it to reach the Asgard he didn't use a ZPM, he used a modified naquedah generator and powered it using the naquedah battery things that power a staff.
