Never trust a naked Nazi

With his punk aesthetic and hardcore footage, gay Canadian filmmaker Bruce LaBruce doesn’t get a lot of theatrical showings for his films ("No Skin off My Ass," "Super 8 1/2," "Hustler White") outside of festivals.
"Skin Flick" traces the **** adventures of a small band of skinheads in a composite city (filming was done in London, Berlin and New York). They have **** with each other and other men but they’re "not faggots," who they think "should be exterminated." They can’t be gay because they watch straight porn while making out with each other.
They hate Jews too, but Dirk (Eden Miller) is keeping a secret from Dieter (Steve Master), with whom he’s lived for three years. They also hate blacks, so they can only enjoy Leroy (Bastian) by raping him in front of his white partner, Karl (Jens Hammer), chanting "f**k the monkey!" as they do so. The rape is part of a home invasion scene that might be considered homage to "A Clockwork Orange."
There’s a woman too, Cameltoe (Nikki Richardson), who generally gives as good as she gets; but her boyfriend Reinhold (Tom International) throws her out of their apartment when he wants to be alone with the guys. "Romeo, Romeo," Cameltoe says, "whyfore art thou a homeo?"
The other member of the gang is Wolfgang (Ralph Steel), who is introduced in the park, first robbing a woman then f*****g Karl in the toilet. There’s also a wannabe, Manfred (Tim Vincent), who they call p***y-boy and keep threatening with initiation. He tries to make himself worthy by masturbating to pictures of Hitler.
That’s some heavy shit for a porno but it doesn’t come across that way in LaBruce’s world. There’s a fair amount of intentional comic relief as well as some unintended comedy due to bad acting. I mean, some of these guys should only open their mouths to insert dicks.
The most typical skinflick scene in "Skin Flick" is the one where a plumber (Darren James) visits Leroy ("I’ve come to check your pipes") while Karl’s in the park with Wolfgang, with the usual results.
LaBruce gets arty with the insertion of badly read poems and poorly sung anthems. He also mixes media, ranging from grainy, black-and-white Super 8 to video to 16 or 35 mm color.
While its erections and c*m shots would get "Skin Flick" an NC-17 if it were to be rated, no penetration is shown. At least that was the case on the DVD Strand sent me and I’ve no reason to think this isn’t the version being marketed, although I’ve heard rumors that a harder-core version exists.
With its mix of amateurishness and professionalism, turnons and turnoffs, art and smut, "Skin Flick" is somewhat reminiscent of Andy Warhol films. It has more meat than the average porno, but perhaps not the kind of meat you’re in the market for. ½
