I never played any of the MMORPGs and I thought I never will, but since I’m a big fan of Tolkien’s books, I may change my mind. Still, I have to inform myself before I spend my precious money on something I might end up hating. Could anyone here tell me how much does the game follow the books?

The developers said that they will try to make the game as close to the book as possible. The game starts sometime when Frodo starts his journey. You will be able to encounter many of the important characters like Gandalf and Aragorn but you won’t be able to alter the main storyline in any way.
