Okay so I got a funky extra credit wordproblem in math, I think I have the correct answer but if any one could check it It would be much <3.

Quote:
A rope over the top of a pulley has the same length on each side. It weighs one third of a pound per foot. On one end hangs a monkey holding a banana, and on the other end is attached a weight equal to the weight of the monkey and the banana. The banana weighs two ounces per inch. The rope is as long (in feet) as the age of the monkey (in years), and the weight of the monkey (in ounces) is the same as the age of the monkey's mother.

The combined ages of the monkey and its mother are thirty years. One half the weight of the monkey, plus the weight of the banana, is one fourth as much as the weight of the weight and the weight of the rope. The monkey's mother is half as old as the monkey will be when it is three times as old as its mother was when she was half as old as the monkey will be when it is as old as its mother will be when she is four times as old as the monkey was when it was twice as old as its mother was when she was one third as old as the monkey was when it was as old as its mother was when she was three times as old as the monkey was when it was one fourth as old as it is now.

How long is the banana?

I got 92inches.

I could give you the answer and pretend I'm smart by figuring it out, but I'll teach you a lesson instead: I wish there was google when I was going to school.

haha. The exact problem, free for anyone to see.

To be honest, i'm a firm believer in having the answers available for you to check your work. Once you are in high school, it's pointless to withhold the answers to math problems, you can learn so much better when you can see the solution.

The banana would essentially be weightless compared to the monkey, would it not?

The weight of the banana wouldn't be negligable, I don't think.

For referrence the answer is :-

Ratio of Monkey Ages = 0.5 x 3 x 0.5 x 4 x 2 x 0.33 x 3 x 0.25 which is 6:4

So the mother is 18 and the monkey is 12.

This gives :-

rope length - 12'
monkey weight - 18oz
rope weight - 64oz

we also have the weight equations :-

w = m + b

(w + r) / 4 = 0.5m + b

where :-

w = weight of the weight
r = weight of the rope
m = weight of the monkey
b = weight of banana

replacing w with m + b (first equation) gives :-

(m + b + r) / 4 = 0.5m + b

solving for b

m + b + r = 2m + 4b

-3b = m - r

b = ( r - m ) / 3

b = ( 64 - 18 ) / 3 (in ounces)

b = 15.33oz

As we know bananas weigh 2oz per inch the banana is 7.67 inches long.

BTW, how old are you Mogling? I remember getting set questions like this is Form 1 (12 to 13 years old).

Regards,
Eduin
