Do you think WoW, or all MMOs for that matter could fall into the same catagory as say, drugs, porn, alchoal and things?

Yes.

Anybody who says "HOLY SHIT NEW MAX CRIT 2312!!!!!!!!!!!" is evidence.

Anything can become an addiction if you let it! MMO games profit from the emotional capital their players invest in creating and leveling their characters. Make level 1-40 easy to get people hooked, then 41+ a pain in the ass. As you gain power you become more and more attached, because quitting would mean you're "throwing it all away." Plus there's the social aspect, nobody wants to lose contact with friends.

I would agree almost with motherface, but being as I am, I must disagree on sheer principle.

The only differance I would say is that you don't physically become addicted to MMO's. You may play a hell of a lot, and sometimes pass up some rl oppurtunities in order to keep playing, but eventually you relize wtf it is just a game. No matter how long it takes you to relize that.

Check out http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/ which talks alot about things like that (Among MANY other topics). Also the Everquest Companion: The Inside Lore of a Gameworld has an entire section dedicated to the supposed "addiction" of online games in which they speak to a number of doctors and gamers about it. They also delve into the Dungeons and Dragons hype of Patricia Pulling and the suicide of Shawn Woolley. Avatars Offline is another good one (This one being a DVD) which has a section dedicated to online addiction.

Porn is slightly different, it's *supposed* to be addicting, if it wasn't we wouldn't be here.

porn = video taped **** for the "fun" of it, and in which 99% of the time there would not even be procreation for the fact that people love to see c*****t and girls swallow Razz

procreation = having actual **** for the sole purpose of creating offspring and NOT having fun..where 99% of the time you cant see the fun ending Razz

porn != procreation.

What i mean is that porn is not "supposed" to be addicting, that's like saying gambling is "supposed" to be addicting.
It just happens to become addictive because both make the body release chemicals that feel good and make you want to do it again.
Slightly different in porn or gambling but ending up being the same.

I get what you mean i just don't think that's an accurate assumption.
Mostly because games seem WAY more addictive then ****, seeing as most people addicted to games have very little ****

Being addicted to porn isn't the same as wanting to f**k all the time.

I'm interested in exactly what makes an addiction ...

.. I just don't understand how people can consider something like looking at porn or playing MMORPGs an addiction, and something like the need to take a shower daily or eat food when you are hungry not ...

and why hasn't anyone paid any attention to the "addictiveness" of television as opposed to something like MMORPGs?

or for that matter, the addictiveness of realpoor and how one might randomly go to it using their bookmarks without even thinking about it

Addiction is usually defined as when an act causes interference with the rest of your life and you are unable to stop it. (And this definition still sucks, what do you call working?).

Porn isn't "addicting" People are supposed to f**k their brains out. Thats why we get boners when we see titties. The penis is incapable of telling the difference between a monitor and flesh. Human beings are born addicted to the act of procreation. Do you understand this? Porn addicts are similair to people who are addicted to high calorie food.

This is how it is different then gambling and WoW. You are not born addicted to these. Most people who are addicted to the latter suffer from other problems, their addiction to MMO's being a symptom (Though this case could be made for a lot of other things too I suppose, let's just say there are not many WoW addicts with high paying jobs and washboard abs).. Gambling is different, but not talking about it will derail the point so ignore it.

ok I see... so nobody cares about an addiction unless it stops them from being a happy productive person ..

no wonder why "mood enhancing" pills are so widely used

I agree the definition sucks. However, when was the last time someone complained they got paid too much?

No, humans are not born "addicted" to f*****g. That would mean suffering withdrawal symptoms when going without f*****g for a period of time. And I know somebody will chime in with a wisecrack about getting the sweats when they don't get any for a while, but in truth, the vast majority of people don't have a physical dependency on ****.

Is it possible to become addicted to ****? Yes. Are some people born more prone to **** addiction than others? Probably. Are all people born addicted to ****? No. Is this the same as your body developing a physical, chemical dependency like drug addiction? No.

As far as I know, withdrawl sympotms aren't neccessary to be classified as an addiction. People in GA want to gamble, but they still don't get the shakes if they're unable too.
