Just make sure you secure it
Don't rely on WEP (easily broken).
Create a VPN right behind the Access Point.
Otherwise, you will host some fucksticks download haven !

How competative is wireless to the good ol cable route?
I'm seriousely considering a home LAN now and I hear wireless is the way to go but I can't help feeling that wires still have an edge for speed... amd I wrong?

Wired is better for speed if you're going computer to computer inside your house. But even with 802.11b (the normal wireless these days) you're getting 11 mbit per second nominal speed, and typically around 2-4 mbit/second actual throughput. Which is so much faster than your typical link to your ISP that it doesn't make any difference if you're wired or unwired.
Even if you're going computer to computer in your house, you can get 802.11a cards now that do 108 mbit/sec - comparable to 100 mbit hardwired ethernet. And those will be getting more popular in the next 9-12 months.
It is nice to be able to just use your pc anywhere in the house - on the deck, on the excercise bike, in the jacuzzi, in bed, by the TV, etc.
I still use wired for my main desktop PC, but that's because it's right next to my wireless router, and most wireless routers also have 2-3 wired ports. If you were doing seriously competitive gaming I guess I'd check that latency with wireless and see if it adds any. Actually I just tested it - the wireless seems to add about 1 msec to the latency compared to my desktop when they're sitting side by side. Pretty much unnoticable, although the wireless is shared with other people in the house so that could make a difference if there were heavy use. It would still be pretty minor I think.
