How do you find out if theres a wireless internet in your area?
just want to connect my PDA to the internet.

PDA might have a hard time connecting, but I'm sure you can find a used antennae booster for it. What kind of PDA?
It's really nice of people to share their networks. I'll probably do it with mine once I get service @ the new place. Will have to make sure it's a secured network first tho. :O

I got the IPAQ 1775 series..
wondering if I can pickup a signal.

I use wifi on my PDAs all the time. Not built in though, they have separate wifi cards you have to plug in which is a pain, especially on one of them because it's a fullsize pc card; the Dell has one that's more of an sdcard (or whatever you call it) size.
Works fine. Trying to do voice over IP over wifi to the PDA is pretty much of an exercise in frustration though, at least so far.

must be easier to find available connections when you're in an apt area or something, ive never seen any other conenctions besides ones in my own house that I pay for. Either that or no one around here ever shares the signal. Either way, I can't stand wireless for gaming.

Packets drop alot and in a game dropped packets = lag = dead... when browsing it's not so bad because the packets can be resent fast enough to not make a real difference as it does in gaming. Large downloads can also corrupt on a wireless connection for much the same reason, see it all the time on wireless routers and sattellite connections with our downloads here at work.

if you have built in wireless, just go around and see if you can't pick something up and connect to it  nothing else to it

How come the packets drop more?

While this may not be 100% accurate it's the best I can do.
Think of it as have a big circle and throwing corn kernels into it, but you're tossing them overhand from 20 feet away, some might land outside the circle but you need to get them all in there. The more you throw the more chance there is for them to end up outside the circle.
Now think if there's a time limit and you have to have all of those kernels in the circle within x amount of time. If you get 98% of them in you did well, just not perfect. Translated to a game you don't get a perfect connection.
All numbers were pulled out of my ass so don't think I went out and did this and it mattered.
See what I am saying though?
A regular connection would be like having a tube from where you are to the circle, a few holes probably are in it but for the most part there isn't as much chance to drop the kernels (packets).

go wireless for everything, unless you're talking satellite.

Wireless routers and the like are fine now really, but there are some out there that s***w em up and they end up having problems. Mostly what is above is really only a huge problem on sattellite now.
I've seen both kinds of wireless connections though, great and crappy and it amazes me the problems that can occur because of a s****y wireless connection.

that was a pretty decent analogy Nic.. also remember wireless is via radio waves and anything else that uses the same band or a nearby frequency such as 2.4 Ghz cordless phones can interfere with a wireless (802.11b) connection. I donno what 802.11g runs at in the spectrum range tho..
