I would say XP but Vista really isn't as bad as the rumors say it is. Still XP is tried and true at the moment.

I've been using Vista 64bit for about 2 months now, aside from 2 restarts I haven't had much trouble with the OS, its very nice looking, I really like the Aero interface and its running all my games exceptionally well. I think it's definitely a step up from XP.

I agree, I love Vista 64 for almost everything I do now. The UI is greatly improved over XP. Searching, Run bar, the look, etc. Vista is just a dream to work with once you learn the tricks.
The only problem I've had, and the only reason I use XP, is to run WoW. For some reason my game would have 250ms latency while running Vista 64, but when I use XP it's around the ~90ms I get when I ping or trace the data centers. I can't find the reason why either.

XP ran much smoother in Age of Conan for me than with Vista.

Vista. The vast majority of its flaws have been worked out, its kernel is more stable than XPs.

Vista is an awesome OS. All of microsoft's OS's had major issue early in the releases, but just like EVERY other microsoft OS, by the time service pack 1 comes out, it just plain pwns. Ive run vista and xp side by side on machines exactly the same, and i can say from personal experience that if you have enough RAM, Vista is clearly the superior system. I wouldnt recommend using vista to play serious games unless you have at least 4 gigs of ram, since vista will suck the hell out of 2 gigs just browsing the web. If, however, your machine has the ram to handle it.....its a step up in every way. Its more stable, and i mean....waaay more stable. As a tech who builds my own pc's, and pc's for all of my gaming friends, I have to say thats the best thing about vista. Most recent game i played seriously was AoC, and it had tons of problems with crashing and memory leaks....in XP anyways, Vista seems to handle it much better......also pulling a better framerate on an nvidia 8600.
and just for your info, not that i think it matters, i use Vista Ult 64, but i would assume any version of vista 64 would perform to same standards
