what kind of windows XP?
home or pro
What you need to do if it's a home version is download a pro version iso and burn it to a disk then use it and use the windows XP Cdkey on this site.
go to search and type windows XP cd key

you need to activate it or it will be shut down
i believe they can tell if winxp is on 2 computers at the same time .. when you activate, but im not sure exactly how that works
as a policy winxp can only be on 1 computer at a time .. so your pretty much screwed unless you can somehow fool them

WTF?
I have Windows XP Pro, and have never acutally registered it. Its a legal/authentic version, but the only thing that gives me shit about it is Word/Excel stuff; and it sitll lets me run the programs, its just like " Hey, you need to register or else we with -blahblahblahblahblah- "
Its a false threat, I have never had it do anything to me.

You're lucky then.
If they do it, you will have to call them and they give u this HUGE ass number to enter to get u back into windows.

All you need is a CD key for Home. If you buy your own copy, all you need to do is enter that code.
However, if you can get a copy of XP Pro somewhere, you can use the CD key on this board. It'll work just fine. You may have some issues if you ever call Microsoft's tech support but it will activate and update with no hassle.
As a side note, if someone gives you a key that starts with FCKGW, don't bother using it. You can install it but the moment you try to update it, it'll shut down.

all version of xp require activation(not registration) unless you have a cooperate key..bulk volume licences don't require activation..so if you didn't get asked abotu activating thats mostlikely why..or your running a hacked version that removes.

you dont have to register winxp ever, but if you want to be able to apply patches, you must have registration enabled.
it's trivial to disable.
