The idea of downloading something like a Service pack for your operating system off IRC is like deciding to have **** with people who might have AIDS ..
Prolly not the best idea

The beta site says "not" to install the end of beta install version on production systems because it'll mess shit up.

The "official" version is up on microsoft's MSDN site (you'd need an MSDN account to grab it though). It's a 475MB ISO. I have it if anyone wants it, but I'm sure it'll be out soon enough for download (I'd guess early this week).

I place a bet that a virus will destroy all XP systems again because of this update.

Official Microsoft SP2 Web page is now up.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx
The scope of changes that Windows XP SP2 will have on Users is detailed
at Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 2 website. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx
Simply put, it WILL affect the way that Windows XP workstations behave,
how they operate with SMS, SQL & MSDE, and more.
Official Message from Microsoft Friday August 6, 2004:
Final testing is complete and at 10:08am this morning we signed off on build 2180 as Windows XP Service Pack 2, releasing it to manufacturing. The final build will be available to beta sites immediately at http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/download/dl3.asp. You will find both English and German versions there, Japanese will follow early next week.
Next week the service pack will be available on the Microsoft Download Center for general download. In the interim we're making the update available to you via the beta web site.
If you are running RC2, or any other build released to beta sites, we invite you to turn on Automatic Updates, and starting on August 10th your system will automatically download the express version of Windows XP SP2. For typical home users this is about a 75 MB download; for those on RC2 it should be less than 30 MB. As soon as the background download is complete, you will be prompted to install SP2 and to accept the EULA (SP2 does not install automatically even if Automatic Updates is set to automatically install security updates). If you have a modem connection, don't "Cancel" the update once it's in progress; just disconnect and when you reconnect later, it will automatcially pick up where it left off until it completes.
The download of the SP2 exe is about 272MB while the Windows Automatic Update is reported to be about 80MB (WAU will only download components needed where the full exe is everything but only those components needed will actually be installed.)

Anyone tried installing this without an OEM copy of XP Pro? I know I don't have a legit key, and I'd rather not have to go through the trouble of reformatting if it completely f***s shit up.

sp2 is microsofts solution to normal win xp sp1 not controlling enough processes already and branching itself out like an insane million legged spider... security thing is suposed to have a firewall too which is suposed to be rather annoying.

It was initially stated to be for everyone but MS backed out eventually and made it for legal owners only.
Expect a cracked fix within a week anyway.
