Granted, I've never played a Battlefield game before, nor have I played many EA first person shooters for PC. I just suck. I've tested out every kit, sans the ones that seem supplemental, no support or medic--mainly because I don't want to suck at support rather than, say, being cannon fodder infantry.
Is there a decent guide out there? I googled up some stuff that appeared rather half-assed and not even approaching a 360 aspect of the game, digressing I have no idea what that'd be like anyway.
Anyway, uh, I need tips or a site! My google sites came up with crap and GameFAQs (as always with any online game) doesn't help a bit.
And what's up with the MEC's sniper rifle? That aim confuses me. :\

dude the learning curve on BF2 is steep. I mean even if you consider yourself pretty jaded when it comes to computer games of all types.
I'd consider myself average to below average at this game and I've been playing it off and on for 6-7 months now or however long it has been out. I don't play every day or for very long, but I have the hang of it now... it took me at least 20-25 hours of playtime though before you figure out the things to be aware of.
For me the hardest thing was simply finding where people were and seeing the enemy. 90% of the time if you see someone first you will kill them unless you just suck at aiming or are having a bad day.
Oh and I don't have the expansion, but my favorite weapon is the G3 assault rifle upgrade. Good accuracy both using the sight and just shooting from the hip, awesome firepower; 1-2 shots will kill just about anyone. Only drawback is the 20 round clip, you can't afford to spray with it or you are dead.
The thing that I notice kills me the most is F2000... whatever that is... I think it's some upgraded grenade launcher from the expansion because I can't get it =P.
Anyway have fun

hm, practice sounds good, anyway. i really like the game.
i think i jumped the gun a bit. i'd only been playing for a good 3-5, maybe more, game hours when i posted originally. still suck, yes, but i'm beginning to see what i'm going to have to eventually grasp, like you said, finding the enemy. It's the whole familiarity business--if you know a map, you're going to do well. if you know the mechanics of a game, you're going to do well. ad infinitum.

Really the best thing you can do is focus on playing one or two classes and one or two maps. That way you more quickly get familiar with the map and the kit you are using.
Before the latest patch came out (1.2) my favorite kit was assault, I was unstoppable w/ the grenade launcher But of course the game is full of whiny little b*****s, so EA nerfed it. Since then I've been playing Special Forces class, Support (using the unlocked PKM mg), and Medic.
But yeah, practice. Everyone sucked when they only had 3 hours total play time ;p The more you play the more you'll start noticing things to watch out for, and to do/not to do..

Defibrillator kills keep me hooked on the Medic. I don't try, or even get them very often, but that one kill you do get makes it all worth the effort.

Yes, those are quite satisfying Knife kills too. Whenever I see a sniper (and he's not guarded by a squad), I either sneak around or dead rush him (if hes close enough). If you can dodge a shot or two...*STAB*
edit: The 1.2 patch made this a bit more difficult though, b/c you can't fire/stab while in mid-air anymore (also, dodging bullets is harder when you can't 'bunny hop' ), nor can you fire while shifting to the prone position--you have to be completely on the ground before you can fire. Sometimes by that time the sniper is pistoling you in the face.

/shrug, I've only used the MEC sniper rifle like once or twice, it sucks. I would only snipe when I was on the USMC team until I got the .50 cal sniper unlock which I now use when sniping. Nothing is more satisfying than killing the pilot of a heli while he tries to be cool and hover over a spawn point / is spawn camping ;p.

Running lowest settings/highest clip plane (or whatever it is that increases draw distance) at a completely acceptable framerate. It never gets choppy whatsoever with 1gig ram and a low end ATI card, x300 series, I believe; it came stock with my dude I got a dell, so it's a piece of shit, admittedly.
basically, you don't need a super rig if you want to play the game. no idea what you'd need to make it look good.

I've got a hp pavilion 2.8ghz, 512mb DDR SDRAM, and an ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 128mb vid card and it runs fine on my PC. Occasionally I get little lag pauses, but I think it's just from so much crap being on my PC Maybe the 512mb.../shrug I don't remember it happening when I first got the PC a couple years ago...
I run on low settings for video, not sure what my clip plane is set at (probably default, b/c i didnt even realize you could change it ;p)

I changed my video settings from low default to low w/ 100% viewing range (clip plane) and the game runs the same.

If you really suck, just take up griefing. It's very satisfying in this game. Put a C4 in the Blackhawk, wait for it to get 100 yards away from the helipad, and blow it. Then make sure to say "Sorry" for maximum effect.

No no no, the blackhawk isn't satisfying enough. Just w***e the attack heli all game, and if someone beats you to it after you die and respawn, throw some c4 on it before they take off. Then once he's off the ground and think hes safe, just be like, "DONT TAKE MY F UCKING HELI YOU POS!@!@!"

In a recent patch they must have added an option to kick people with negative scores, so you have to play for real for a few minutes, then start the fun. Or you can just put the C4 on all the vehicles and kill your entire team with 1 button press, and then get instakicked.
Another thing that's cool is to get the fat sniper rifle (I forget what it's called, the one you get from unlocking) and climb up onto the aircraft carrier's tower (as an American) and snipe guys when they get into the cockpit of the aircraft. Then they die and don't understand how, not realizing that the rifle shoots through glass.

lol yeah thats fun too.
I think some server have rules/limits to prevent excessive TKing. I'm pretty sure most servers will auto-kick anyone who is punished for 3 TKs. But some servers don't have that option on and its just about impossible to vote kick anyone in this game b/c half the people have auto-no vote on.

I don't see how you can have trouble with this game. Even the unskilled shouldn't have a problem as long as they tankwhore or play a medic and heal/rez.
I love assault. The nube tube is great and the gun owns too.

I don't like tank whoring. Someone else can use that thing better than I can, so I'd just as soon take to the turret and let someone else pilot the f****r. Granted, that's probably being a bit too passive in a game that antithesizes those sentiments; I'll probably get over it and opt to man vehicles more so than I do now in time.
Medic is really fun, though. Chuck around med packs for easy points, self-regen, AE regen, panels and the standard primary weapon isn't awful from my experience. Not sure why I don't have more play time as one, I just always seem to go for Assault.
| Mugaaz wrote: | | I love assault. The nube tube is great and the gun owns too. |
Since I've only played v1.2, I only know v1.2. But, though nerfed (to what degree, I do not know), it's nearly indispensible when playing Karkand, to me anyway.

Oh, and about winning a round--the x2 bonus for global points--do the points go to the victorious team or just the commander?

So everything I said after Mugaaz's second quote in my last post--b******t. I'm now an official tank w***e.
FFS, this whole time I thought I was getting 2x points for helping my team win.

Well it can still be an effective weapon, truthfully I haven't used it all that much since the patch. You used to be able to jump and fire the grenade launcher while in mid-air (giving you a better elevation to shoot from, and was still fairly accurate), then run around like an idiot sprinting/jumping/proning as if having a seizure while reloading (assuming you missed on the first shot ;p).
I've got like 6,000 kills w/ the GL on Karkand, w/ a 70% accuracy rating

I think the point bonus is more to make up for the lack of points the commander will be earning hiding his ass in the back and actually doing his job.
Tank whoring does earn you quite a few points but it can be boring as shit especially if other people are doing it and you end up sitting around waiting for the tank to respawn.
I pretty much only play spec ops, because I think they are the most versatile. They got the G3 which is one of the best guns in my opinion (great accuracy on burst and decent on full auto) but it eats up bullets like a m**********r. And unlike support/medics they can actually deal with folks in tanks/apcs with their C4.
I don't play any maps with choppers or jets either, I think they are gay as shit until they balance them. I SHOULDNT f*****g lose to a jet or chopper in one of those anti-air vehicles in a f*****g HEAD-ON fight. They need to nerf the unlimited chaff b******t too.

Yeah I don't play maps w/ Jets either, you just get some a*****e flying by at 500mph dropping 4 or 5 bigass bombs then reloading and repeating the entire round.
Choppers on the other land I love I'm unstoppable as long as I have a gunner that is worth a shit. I'm generally playing on either Karkand or Sharqi..

I don't mind the planes. There's a barrage of explosions for 10 or so seconds, and then the idiots in the sky are trying to do a 360 while I steal their base. Choppers are a little troublesome, because of their maneuverability.

Not if you've learned how to maneuver them! I am in total control of the skies
edit: The reason I don't play jet maps is because I had to unplug my joystick in order to fly helis. I've got an old 'Cyborg 3D Gold USB' joystick that doesn't make drivers for windows XP, so I can't calibrate the joystick right. When I'm in game with the joystick plugged in there would always be a leftward/downward tilt the plane would always take. So flying level was much more annoying than it should have been.
I fly the heli w/ mouse and keyboard, but the joystick would cause the heli to pitch down and left slightly, making it nearly impossible to hover good enough for a rookie gunner to hit anything
So, the joystick has been unplugged for a couple months now ..
