You know how laptops (at least Dell, probably most others) come with a sheet of clear protective plastic over the cover so it doesn't get scratched during shipping? I was in a meeting and noticed that about half of the people still had that on, six months later (not to generalize, but they were all from India - not sure if that's a factor). So I tried to talk them into removing it. I say "you know, that plastic isn't for looks - it's just meant to be temporary" and they're "Yes, yes, I know, I'm aware of that". I say "Look, I took it off of mine and now it's not all shiny and fake looking - I can pull yours right off like this" and they get all panicked and yank the laptop away from me - "yes yes I know - no please - it is not necessary to remove it - I am aware - it is fine as it is".

So what's up with that? It reminds me of my in-laws who still have plastic covers on their lampshades and sofas, thirty years after they bought them.

They are obsessed with "keeping it new". Someone needs to gently tell them that nobody cares what the condition of their laptop/couch/children is.

When I was a kid I was kinda like this, it really is a mental condition.

Trust me! They need help!

Call them names like 'weirdass,' 'fucktard,' and 'fruitloop.' You might get some of 'em to stop.

(I also find it ironic that non-showering Indians are worried about keep their notebooks clean.)

Lots of people leave tags on clothing now (hats, suit jackets or sportcoats, etc). It's not that different.

The way I figure it, if they own it, it's their choice. Let them look silly.

This is why they leave the wrapping on the laptop:

They buy them, use them, and return them. Working for best buy, i had numerous indians (from india not cleveland hehe) buy laptops from me, stiff me on any possible add-ons (f*****g my sales to hell) and then returning the laptop just before the return period (there's no restocking fee). It was pretty damn obvious to me they were using it for some short thing and returning it. I even think once i they did this scam: Buy one, have their friend buy one near the end of the return policy, and return the newest one with the older receipt (the serial numbers are never tracked well if at all and you can do this at some stores) this perpetual scheme works until the model goes clearance and they just return the one they've used for 4 months or so and it costs them nothing.
