Personally, I think it's a bad idea. I'm at work, and usually those kinds of things are noticeable when they flash with bright colors.
I understand your reasons for trying it though, we are a bunch of deadbeats and this server costs $$$.

I don't know I don't watch RP while at work, but if some cant anymore cause of the porn....then why not take them out? We can put all the porn we want somewere. No need to use banners.

That kind of thing just won't do, it's Pink with a picture of a chick's face and some flashing prices.
Bright red and way too big.
Slightly better except for the big "WOW"
It's a problem because i can't reliably just jump out of a thread to another to avoid it (like nws pictures).

Banners on this site is hopeless because we don't get new traffic. It's the same users hitting the board over and over. Once we've clicked a banner once we've pretty much seen all it has to offer and that's that. No one clicks the same banner twice man.
Unfortunately the donation system is also hopeless because people donate 10 bucks once and then that's that. There's no steady income because as I said, it's the same users hitting the page over and over. We don't get new traffic, ever. It's a closed community.
On the other hand if you turned eq.realpoor.com into a hopping EQ site, banners and donations might pay off there.

(Considering that I sit under a sign that says "Viewing of **** explicit materials is grounds for immediate revocation of computer privileges all across campus).
Besides, I'm supposed to be the one that smacks all the youngsters on the wrist for viewing such things :p

couldnt we just put up a banner that says click here to suport rp (NWS)? I mean it would accomplish the same thing wouldnt it? They dont care if the banners up only how many people click the link, right? I think most of us would be willing to click it once and awhile while we are safely at hope to suport RP.

i'd give money before i click on a banner ad. i clicked on it when i saw it to see where it took me too. after that, i only click on them by accident.

banners dont bug me, I like r00ts idea, but i doubt alot of people will donate anything just to get rid of them.
A better idea might be something like ezboard does. on monkly business they raise a certain amount every so often to keep the banners off.
Everyone donates until they reach a certain amount, and then the banners go away for 6 months.
I think something like that would be much more likely to work, but then again you'd have people getting mad about that also.

i actually like slashdot's way of handling advertisements. you pay for pageviews there. so i pay, i think its' $5 for 1000 pageviews.
that way, the people who are using up a majority of hte pageviews are having to pay more money to keep it ad-free.
if you're just a lurker and you don't want banners, well then, you're $5 will go a lot longer than the other guys, but you're not using up as many server resources either.
i have no idea how hard something like this would be to implament, but i think this would a) encourage people to donate and b) get rid of banners for those of us who hate them =P
