Well, that's OK then. For a second when I heard we were seizing innocent women and children and leaving notes that they'd be released if people did what we wanted, that we might not still be the good guys. But as long as we say after the fact that we wouldn't really have hurt them, I guess it's all good. Doubtless the Iraqis will appreciate the subtlety.

Haha, he says the wife and daughter of the Iraqi general were "picked up" like they found them on the side of the highway looking for a ride to Tikrit. I guess getting "picked up" sounds nicer than your home being broken into by 10 marines in the early morning hours and being forced into a van at gunpoint.

The US took in scientists, you bimbo. Not people who had anything to do with the death camps.
If you were a german general in the army, in charge of a tank battalion lets say, you were not considered a war criminal. If you were a private working in a death camp you were guilty of war crimes for the most part.
Some scientist working on rockets in a lab is not the same as Mengele who did experiments on humans.

Common sense means understanding what everyone understands - gut level reaction without benefit of thought. By definition, it's nothing to brag about. Advances in knowledge or thought don't come from applying common sense, but from fighting the seduction of the easy, obvious answer, and looking deeper.
Although I don't know that you have to look too deeply to know that kidnapping is wrong, and that you don't strengthen law and order through criminal acts.

The "scientists" such as Von Braun MADE the gas used to kill them in mass as fast as possible (gas chambers) in Dora, one of the most horrible deathcamps (Dora wasn't a workcamp). The "lab" was a bunch of "inmates" working in a huge factory, using no protection for eyes, inhalation or skin. Being "employed" in the factory was the same as signing up for death. Within 2 months, people turned blind, had horrible rashes, and serious lung disorder, in the end ... died. Their expectancy inside the "lab/factory was 6 months. What's the difference? Killing people in the name of Science, or killing them in the name of Production?

BTW, the extraction of German scientists was considered one of the best operations of the war. We got much more of them than Stalin did, and this is a very good thing. Stalin was able to acquire significant amounts of uranium oxide ore at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Dahlem in 1945, luckily, he was unable to acquire the necessary know-how to work with it and the creation of his own atomic weapons were delayed as a result.
