Just to answer the question, Get XP if you enjoy gaming. Get mac if you don't.

If you're looking for compatibility, gaming, or upgradability. Standardization in networking, filesharing, and just about everything else in comparison to the rest of the business world go for a PC. Otherwise go for a mac. As for XP vs. Linux, do you either want to not share anything between a regular pc (ubuntu client) or want to share something (ala fedora etc). Because SAMBA configuration can be a huge headache. I know a lot of geeks get up in arms about how great linux is, but I like stuff that works with what everyone else works with. XP may not be perfect but my PC doesnt crash every three seconds either and I'm pretty content with my operating system.

If you know nothing about computers and just want to use IM go for a mac. If you know the basics of computers and want to play games or use it for work, go for a PC. I don't know enough about Linux to comment on it, but from what I have heard, it is confusing.

A few of my friends have started using Lolinux, i'm tempted to do the same for a challenge, though i'd probably only do it once i got a new pc and kept this one for tinkering.

if it were up to me knowing how much gaming and online surfing i do, i'd go with XP, by the way no one computer is "better" than the other, they are all good at something

In this case of mac, looking pretty.

I was thinking of dual booting Beryl with XP, but the only reason I want Beryl is because it looks so friggin' awesome.

Windows XP for gaming, like everyone else says.

Mac for...something...I guess if you don't know much about the functionality of computers it's user-friendly.

its really a personal opinion. its like asking mac or pc? OSX is freakin tight but XP is reliable for the windows platform. Vista still has ALOT of work to be done.

I've been using windows all my life and i've never had anything go wrong with it. It seems like everything is windows compatible and some of those others you mentioned aren't.

If you want the least amount of problems, i'd go with Windows
