Al-Qaida suspects put up ‘ferocious resistance’
U.S. says none of its troops are taking part in Pakistan battle
NBC, MSNBC and news services
Updated: 4:04 p.m. ET March 19, 2004WANA, Pakistan - Backed by helicopter gunships, jets and artillery, thousands of Pakistani army reinforcements joined a major offensive Friday in border tribal villages where al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, was believed to be surrounded.
Across the border, Afghan authorities reported the arrests of “semi-senior” terrorist leaders.
It was unclear whether those who were detained had fled the battle in Pakistan, where helicopter gunships fired rockets at houses in Shin Warsak, five miles southwest of the main town, Wana. Villagers were streaming out of the besieged region in pickup trucks loaded with families and possessions.
Villagers who had not fled reported a lull in the fighting Friday afternoon amid reports that tribal elders were trying to establish a cease-fire.
Pakistani forces have battled with hundreds of militants in at least five villages near Wana, pounding fortress-like mud-brick compounds. An intelligence official said “dozens” were killed Thursday.
“At least 15 soldiers have been killed since yesterday,” said another official, who declined to be identified. “There’s ferocious resistance, but a house-to-house search has started on the outskirts of Shin Warsak.”
At least two militants were killed Friday in fighting in the area, said Gen. Shaukat Sultan, a spokesman for the army. At least 41 people — 15 soldiers and 26 suspected militants — were killed earlier in the week.
Sultan said Pakistani forces had underestimated the resistance they would face and had “barged into a hardened terrorists’ den.” He said the operation was further complicated because the local population was, “on the whole, sympathetic” to the militants.
Taliban: Al-Zawahri in Afghanistan
A spokesman for the Pakistani army told NBC News on Thursday, quoting the country’s president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, that a “high-value target” was cornered based on the level of resistance Pakistani forces were encountering.
Musharraf said the identity of the target was unknown, but three other senior government officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that intelligence indicated that the figure was al-Zawahri.
A senior U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News that because of the intense fighting, it could be several days before the identity of the target could be determined. Other Pakistani officials, meanwhile, denied rumors on financial markets Friday that al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden himself had been captured.
In Afghanistan, Abdul Samad, a spokesman for the former ruling Taliban told the AP that both al-Zawahri and bin Laden were alive and hiding inside Afghanistan, far from the Pakistani guns. “Muslims of the world — don’t worry about them. ... They are fine,” Samad said.
Al Jazeera television quoted a spokesman for the Taliban as saying supporters would “carry out more attacks against international coalition forces if they continue to chase us.”
Rice: No U.S. troops involved
In Washington, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said Friday on NBC’s “Today” show that it still was not clear who the target might be and that U.S. troops were not involved. “This is really the Pakistanis’ fight at this point,” she said, leaving the door open to a Pakistani request for help.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, told ABC News that while the capture of al-Zawahri “would be a big blow,” it would be “just one more step in the many steps it is going to take to deal with international terrorism.”
A Pakistani intelligence official told the AP that 18 suspects had been arrested in the border fighting, some of whom were providing useful information. He said those suspects reported that al-Zawahri had been injured in the operation.
Another Pakistani official said that al-Zawahri might have been with a group of rebels who fled at the beginning of the offensive Tuesday and were believed to have taken refuge in Shin Warsak. The militants’ armored vehicle had come under fire, and there was speculation that some of those inside, perhaps including al-Zawahri, might have been wounded, the official said.
What a f*****g croc of HORSE SHIT.
He goes into Iraq and overthrows the whole f*****g government citing WMD and clear and imminent danger and shit all for the war against terrorsim.
Now they got the number two guy in their f*****g SIGHTS and they just sit on their ass.
Why? they are all f*****g stuck as garrison in IRAQ is my guess and withdrawing now would probably tactically weaken our foothold and leave Iraq vulenrable.
Bush is hoping bounty on the heads of the actual al Queda will be enough to get their man, but then...why not just bounty the m***********s in the first place...or better yet, save the military effort for the f*****g al queda and not some old family squabble in Iraq.
More proof George Bush is a failure.
If Bush had a f*****g OUNCE of brains he would be in there blowing the SHIT out of the Aqueda right now.
THOSE are the m***********s that attacked us.

Bin Laden's right-hand man slips net
By Rodney Dalton, New York correspondent and Agencies
March 20, 2004
A BULLETPROOF LandCruiser at high speed bursting out of a tribal compound in Pakistan's South Waziristan region was just the latest infuriating setback in the US's quest to bring down the top of the al-Qa'ida tree.
The car, followed by two armoured vehicles and a phalanx of heavily armed militants able to wipe out dozens of crack troops sent to blast the terrorists from their nest, is believed to have contained Ayman al-Zawahiri, right-hand man to Osama bin Laden.
Wow ...what a f*****g shitbird.
One of our warthogs firing a shitpot of spent uranium rounds woulda turned that car into swiss cheese.
