Well my aunt did something stupid.

She bought a pos comp at a pawn shop thinking she had found something good.

It's an old AMD K6 400 had 64mb of ram but I put in 3 128 sticks so now it has about 380mb of ram.

It has never been reformatted so I went ahead and did that and put win 98 SE on it now I gotta find the sound drivers and shit. I might put in this old voodoo 3 card I got because it only has 8mb max shared video memory.

So lets see.

3 sticks of 128mb pc100 SDRAM
1 voodoo 3 graphics card
new install of win 98 SE
a few hours of my time I could of did other shit with.

Note: she kept calling me for days asking me how to fix this and that and it was getting annoying. Ain't mt fault she paid 300$ for a peace of shit.

Give her the computer, and mention the cost if it comes up or if it seems acceptable. It gets sticky when money comes into play with family members. I wouldn't charge a family member anything unless something was agreed upon first, and even then it gets to me. If she writes your effort off, then just move on. People might belittle you for asking this question, but you did help out your aunt by spending time and effort on her computer. I'm assuming that you didn't do it for the hope of compensation, but are just curious about what payment would sound right. If she is expecting to pay you decently for the work, charge her the cost of the equiptment and let her pay what ever else for your time. Blood is blood. As little as possible while making sure you are not hurt.

You shouldn't be curious about what you would get paid if you did a favor for a family member. If you're on speaking terms you should never expect any kind of payment, don't even expect a thank you. That way anything you do receive is a surprise and a bonus. Call me old fashioned but I can't think of doing something for a member of my family that they don't already deserve, with no mention of costs or prices ever coming up not even as a joke.

If you had to buy parts then tell her what you spent on parts but if you charge for labor you are a f**k head plain and simple.

I did Power Points for my uncle inlaw for his job, would give my fucktons. I refused it and he got so offended he nearly spit in my face. I took it, spent quadruple the time on the project that it should have which still was only about an hour, and ran away with 80 bucks or so each time.

Again, if they offer it and don't want it back, then take it. If not, do it out of pure family ties. No one in my family I wouldn't do anything for without asking for compensation.

By your own feable communication skills, you did not:

1) Fix the computer. You did not state a problem. What you did do however was add to the machine, evidently beyond her knowledge with the intentions of charging her for shit you had laying around. Worthless shit I might add. That was very...noble....hahahahahha, too funny.

Give her some free advice so that next time she doesn't buy a crappy computer. and maybe just maybe by not charging she can get one sooner?

I never charged my family for doing computer work for them, all i would ask for is the cost of the items I bought for the computer and thats it. I just wouldn't feel right about asking my family to pay for me doing something that is honestly not that hard to do. But when doing work for others during my spar time, I normaly ask for 20 an hour, and for them to get my name out to friends, since that is still a cheap price.

Paden she's already been pants'd for 300 dollars on a total lemon. I couldn't see charging her more beyond the cost of the parts you install (Ram, vid card)

I don't think RP has factored sibling rivalry into this ordeal.

My uncle usually pays me a little bit for doing computer work for him, as does my mom. It's not much, and it's far less than what they would have to pay for a new computer or the Geek Squad. I don't ask for money, but they hand over cash, and you'd be offending them to refuse the money they offer you.

Yeah, main difference tho is you're being offered something, you aren't looking for it. From what I know also, I think I'd be much more satisfied getting my computer fixed by you as opposed to Paden. I'd probably just burn it when I got it back from him. Fat people smell funny.
