Is it just wattage? I'm looking to buy a new set of speakers, 2.1 or maybe 5.1, for around 50-100 bucks. So far I've found a 100W 2.1 set for $53 on newegg. Is there some reason these speakers might not be that great? Does wattage relate directly to sound levels? I know absolutely nothing about speakers

it's not jsut wattage. which wattage can very misleading btw. Frequency response and shit is more important IMHO. that's how low and high and overall blanced the sound is

speaker selection depends on what you're using the speakers for...
do you listen to metal and rock? heavy base?
detail important? Classical or jazz?
cross overs, driver and cones, cabinet and baffles all make a difference.
If you're asking about speakers the best bet is to find out what you want them to do, then go from there.
Also, when demo'ing speakers, make sure you bring a CD you know well, know what it's suppose to sound like.
found this for ya:

that may help some

Speakers that can handle blasting hardcore, punk, or indy rock so that it can be heard clearly three rooms away. That's what I'm looking for. I would like to find speakers with clear bass; none of that muffled super-loud annoying gangster rap shit. Just clear and audible.
+ yes, computer speakers.

I'm assuming these are computer speakers and that the wattage is from the built in amp? If not, you just have to make sure the RMS wattage of the speakers <= the RMS wattage of the amp you hook em up to. And wattage doesn't = quality of sound.
Specs mean squat.
"Good" is completely subjective. When shopping for speakers, in general, I'd suggest you bring your own reference material and listen to various sets of speakers (in a soundroom, if that's at all possible). Find a set in your price range that sounds good to you.
If you're buying speakers unheard, check the review sites and roll the dice.

Only you would think so. Even Owyyn realizes that it was a weak troll.
