I've heard of Second Life on TV, and got kind of interested, so I did a little web searching, but unfortunately, I still don't quite get it. Is it, like, a weird variant of the MMO role playing games? Or is it more like an internet forum with pretty pictures (GUI et al)?

The jury's still out on definitions, as far as I know. Personally, I would not call SL a game, at least not in the classical sense of the word – there is no storyline, no obvious goals to achieve, no real conflict… But it is what the MMO crowd would call a "persistent world". Check out SL's wikipedia entry for details on definitions and distinctions.
