What happens with -5 in Eve Online?

Hi all! I have a really important question and I'd like someone to answer it really quickly - I'd really appreciate it. What is going to happen if I get a -5 with a faction? Is it possible that I would get killed whenever I enter their space? Is there a way to prevent this?

There is a skill that would make it impossible to get a -5, at least by doing the usual mission work. I think that it's a diplomacy skill but I'm not sure so you should double check this. It can be really inconvenient - I know some guys who are unable to enter the amar space.
