AMD stock dropped like 4.5 points in the last week? Possibly a good time to buy? It was going up and forn between 15.5 and 17.5 for a week or so then it dropped from 17.5 to like 12.97.

I think it's a good time to buy, but you won't see instant gains. The chip market as well as computer sales are always lower in the mid-summer timeframe. It's likely to perform well as computer sales improve in late august.

AMD's profits aren't tied mostly to cpu sales, but rather to flash memory sales. That is what is currently holding their stock up has they have the big end of the stick in that market after recent acquisitions. However, they are trailing Intel badly in the cpu market. Basically, for AMD, they don't get as much moolah making a high end cpu as they do making older XPs or flash memory cards.
Ed at www.overclockers.com has put a neat little summary about Intel and AMD. One of the first few items in the news.
But the title of this thread ain't correct. It's not only AMD. Pretty much all superconductive companies went down after the Merill Lynch downgrade.
