If you don't you should.

If you do, what are you on?

I want a more robust firewall when I switch to a single pc to a 3-4 piece network, hopefully something that's free.

Anyone know of possibly an open source movement firewall?

i got a router w/ firewall.

I wouldn't recommend a software firewall unless you plan on hosting ftp or something like that with a static ip.

I was considering it... but the router w/firewall is pretty tight, eh? No loopholes or security issues?

hands down Zonealarm when using a router with firewall.
alerts you on any incomming or outgoing connection to the internet and can be set to never let a certian program connect.

I said it before, people here should use Leaktest to check if you computer is talking behind your back.
download it here....

http://grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm

I bet you fail.

oh, also what good is a firewall, when it only blocks Incomming connections and doesnt do shit for outgoing.
Trojan virus = outgoing
spyware = outgoing
sniffers = outgoing

Router firewalls are 256k bit encryption. No one is getting through that unless you got files pertaining to the Pentagon / Gov't on your computer

I have nothing on my PC worth stealing or saving for that matter.

I have Zone Alarm atm but the only reason i use it is because it stops those Mesenger Service pop ups.

You know the ones I am talking about!

You are correct that leaktest will fail. That's because it's trying to make an outgoing connection. The router protects against incoming requests. If you have a good virus scanner and a router firewall you're doing just fine. You should just make sure to get all your updates for the virus scanner. You're really only vunerable if you install software from an unsafe source without scanning it first.

I think you're thinking of a VPN. A pure firewall doesn't use encryption at all; it just allows or disallows access to TCP and UDP ports across the firewall, either through configuration, statefully watching outbound sessions and allowing corresponding inbound traffic, or universal plug and play. The same thing goes for NAT - it's not a pure firewall, but it might as well be since it has pretty much the same effect.

VPNs use encryption, but you can only use those between specific endpoints where you're known as a user, like from home to work, not for random sessions that you set up to anywhere in the net.

depends on the encryption method gimp

256 bit can be as hard or as easy as the method you use to encrypt whatever it is you're encrypting
