Is it just a dungeon, or are there special features about it?
I've doneDeadmines and the Stockades, and theres never been any other people in the zones, plus the respawn rate is extremely slow. Is this zone just for the specific group you zone in with? If another group went in do they have their own version of the zone, unable to see the other group? Just wondering how this works.

It's like a zone. The instances I've been in all required we walk through a swirling portal. Ragefire Chasm, inner Wailing Caverns and uhh... maybe that's it.

An instance is a replica of a zone that only 1 group or 1 raid can enter at a time. When you go into it, no one can follow you unless they are in your party or raid. If they zone in, they will be in a different instance, or copy of that zone. This prevents overkill, fighting for raid times, and other such things. Instances go from ones like razor and wailing caverns all the way to 60. When you enter an instance, it looks like a portal, and it is the only other time other than changing continents that you will see a load screen.

The respawn will vary depending on the zones.
Ragefire Chasm, Wailing Caverns, Shadowfang Keep and Blackfathom Deeps have very slow respawn. If you wipe, you can pretty much safely run back to where you wiped.
Starting with Razorfen Kraul, Gnomeregan and up, respawn is much faster. If you wipe deep in dungeon, the entrance has respawned most probably and you'll have to reclear it.
It doesn't exactly prevent overkill. You can get a raid in a one group instance. However, you won't get credit for kill quests, you won't be able to loot quest items and you will probably get 0 exp. However, you could 2 group a boss mob for loot. Pretty cheesy to do so though.

Most of them are set up like a "dungeon crawl" in which your group will pretty much constantly be moving further in, and not just sitting in one area.
