That's kind of like asking "how does the universe work?" Be more specific.
I'm not a mormon but I know some. It's based on christianity, but with some pretty major differences.

Mormons believed that after Jesus died on the cross, he ventured forth to the new world to spread the word of God, before he miraclously came back to life in what we celebrate as Easter in today's world. There were rumors in the new world amoung the Indians of a bearded man that some Mormon scholars claim was Jesus.
Also the entire Mormon religion is based off golden plaques that the creator of the Mormon church found, after having a dream from God. The plaques are in code, but are supposed to be scriptures of Jesus's visit amoungest the Indians after his death on the cross.
Or something like that...

95% my friend. Was the worst place i have ever lived. All the Bias and Racism. You could feel it walking into a store. I had absolutely 0 Mormon friends because there parents told them not to hang around with me because i was going to corrupt their mind and shit. Being LDS (or Mormon) is like being someone who is in a Cult.

My friends aren't real good mormons. Since we got out of college the one guy has been to my apartment 4 times. On 2 of those times he wound up throwing up from excessive alchohol consumption. The third time, I did hehe. They never really went to church, but they did pay their 10% tithe. The church actually sends you a bill every month instead of asking you to come in and put in the collection basket on Sunday.
They never had any problem with hanging out with me though. In fact one of them wanted me to date his sister :p (wouldn't really want to date a good friend's sister even with the mormon BS). One of them gave me a copy of the book of mormon which I still have but I don't think I've ever opened it.

Being an ex mormon I can answer any of your questions.
The Book of Mormon starts by saying that God sent Nephi and his family to the new world (South America to be exact) long ago. During this time tribes were formed based on beliefs of the brothers of Nephi (Lamen and Lemuel) and Nephi himself, this started the first two tribes the Nephites (good) and Lamenites (bad). Wars ensued, lots of bible like stuff happened then about 2000 years ago after Christ died he came to them for a few days (I forgot how long exactly) as a ressurected being. The Mormons reference a passage in the bible (and no I don't know the location of said passage) of Christ speaking and saying that he had other sheep to attend to. In a way this is supported by the legend of Tetochotal (sp?) among the Mayans or Aztecs (again, I forget which one). A while later during a war a man named Moroni (the angel on top of all Mormon Temples) buried the plates which were the record that became the Book of Mormon. (Mormon was Moroni's father)
Fast forward to the 1830's and Joseph Smith recieves a vision from God, Christ and the Holy Ghost in which they give him some instructions (been a long time since I went through this so I have forgotten it as well). He ends up with the Golden Plates, which are in a language no one understands, so God imparts on Joseph and a couple others the ability to translate this language.
Persecution begins in NY where all of this is starting and they move West to Illinois, they are doing well enough there, they support Polygamy due to their numbers being so low. This doesn't make locals happy, the locals rise against the Mormons, take Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum to jail and end up executing them. They go down in history as Martyrs.
Brigham Young begins his trek Westward, they encounter many difficulties getting to Utah but finally make it.
During one of their harvests a bunch of crickets/locusts came and began eating the crops, the Mormons prayed and Seagulls came and ate the crickets.
Polygamy was outlawed after Pres Buchannan started sending an army out to the Mormons.
Mormons have a tendency to get rid of controversial doctorine when it suits them best. Polygamy being one, and ordaining a black man as a Priest is another.
The reason for the black thing is that Mormons believe all black people are decendants of Cain after God changed his form to that of black to mark him forever. They say that the time was not quite right until the mid 70's.
Anything else?

I'd need more than one man's vision in 1830 to become a believer. Religion is funny.
I may start worshipping Elavis or Avatar of War. I haven't decided.

I gathered that the mormons think that at all time there is a prophet and 12 apostles on the earth... My question is, when these people die how is a new one chosen? is like, a baby chosed and is raised that way, or are they like "omg you have been instilled with the spirit of the prophet" talking to an already grown adult?
