...honest opinion. I run a Comfort Suites Hotel in NC. We have a "deluxe continental breakfast" spread every morning, but I still keep getting complaints about it not being enough. Yet, if I took the advice of those departing guests it wouldn't be a continental breakfast, it'd be a "full breakfast".

Here's what we have every morning:

Coffee
Decaf Coffee
Apple Juice
Orange Juice
Whole Milk
2% Milk
Hot Chocalate
Tea
Yogurt
Fruit Cups
Bananas
Microwaveble sausage biscuits
Blueberry Muffins
Banana Nut Muffins
Cereal
Butter
Cream Cheese
Assorted Danishes
Assorted Bagels
Jelly
You can even make your own waffle

i dont even bother with contenintal (sp) breakfasts at hotels. waste of time when i can hit mcdonalds and get something half cooked. however if a hotel offers a full breakfast, i'd go out of my way to get it. especially the buffet breakfasts. marriott charged 11 bucks for the breakfast buffet, and since my company footed the bill it was wonderful.

oh yea make sure you give free high speed wireless internet, and a free porn channel Very Happy

Instant oatmeal!

Everything you offer, like most continental breakfasts is loaded with carbs--good and bad. Some people want something "healthier," but I have no clue what is considered healthier than the cereal, yogurt, and fruit already offered. Some people, however, think they should have a freaking seven course meal for free.

Ask them what they'd like to see on the sideboard. Feedback helps immensely.

When I lived in Texas Doc it seemed like they did everything in excess over there, especially eating. Here in NC I think its more quality over quantity, but just out of curiosity have you documented where all the complainers were from?

Personally, all I need is a good bowl of cereal in the morning, or sometimes and english muffin.

Oh yeah, forgot about the instant oatmeal, sorry Principessa...we do have an assorted batch of those.

And also forgot to mention, the breakfast comes with the room, no extra money charged for it. You should see some of the greedy guests hoarding this food for lunch. Shocked

Go to a Hampton Inn and check out their breakfast and use that as your model if you want.

I hate hotels like that I get f****d out of per diem to eat what I want for breakfast when on the road.

And thats why you get complaints from buisness peeps. If you provide that and thats not what they like to eat they have to pay for it themselves. The other thing is most people like to eat at the hotel in the morning instead of going look for something, so they look for a full breakfast bar that they can eat fast and not waist time.

My 2 cents

Doc, my wife and i have driven all over the country since we got married. We both read your list and both agree that is a kick ass breakfast. Especially since it is included in the cost of the room and such.

My wife and i are the ones who take a little extra for the trip though! Embarassed

Naw, this is part of the Choice Hotels franchise, but it's owned by a couple of Indian brothers. Oddly enough, one was born in Nigeria and the other in London. And yes, their last name is Patel (Indian for land owner).

Thanks everyone, this has been getting me p****d off for the longest time now. 99.9% of the complaints about my hotel have been because guests think we don't offer enough on our breakfast...I'm so tempted to just put out coffee, juice, and danishes from now on. Wink

Ahh, another one of "those" properties. hehe
I remember meeting about 500 Indians named Patel at some Choice Hotels Int. Convention. They are takin over the hotel industry! Now if we could just get them to put money INTO their properties and keep them up to the Choice Hotel standards. /snicker
I hope your Patel is forkin over the dough for ya. =)
What part of the country are you in? How much of your revenue comes from the 800 line and .com? Just curious.
Your breakfast is more than enough!! When I think of deluxe cont breakfast I think of anything past danish and coffee. We had an omlette bar in ours but it was a Clarion and we had a restaurant so finding a chef wasnt an issue. Im sure your housekeepers set yours up or your desk staff so an omlette bar isnt an option. Its actually pretty cheap though eggs are nothin.

I'd say like toast, and maybe just some scrambled eggs served in those big metal tubs. That + what you have = the perfect continental breakfast imo.

You basically have:

Basic Continental Breakfast
Coffee/Decaf/Tea/Hot Chocolate
Apple/Orange Juice

Yogurt
Fruit Cups/Bananas

Blueberry/Banana Nut Muffins
Assorted Danishes
Assorted Bagels
Cereal

Butter/Cream Cheese/Jelly

Deluxe Continental Breakfast
Microwaveble sausage biscuits
Make your own waffle

This is pretty good, but possibly falling a bit short in the "Deluxe" department. I'd be inclined to add a couple more juice flavors (tomato/grapefruit), possibly croissants and toast (which I suspect you just forgot to mention), maybe some hardboiled eggs, instant oatmeal and a couple more kinds of fresh fruit (unless the fruit cups are already fresh, but I'm picturing plastic containers from the store). Make your own waffle is a nice touch if it's actually possible to do it and the waffles are decent. If they're microwave or toaster waffles and there's one toaster that's always in use (which I've certainly seen), it's not that helpful.

I think presentation is a big part of it too. Most people will believe something is good if you make a big point of telling them how good it is. Get some pretentious signs and fancy bowls etc if you haven't already.

Can the whole thing, offer an omlette/belgian waffle bar and put a big fancy hat on your "cook".
People think its fancy and expensive and will actually cost you less in the long run.
You just need eggs, tabasco, ketchup, cheese, onion, mushroom, tomato, jalapeno, oil, green pepper, ham, waffles, whipped cream, strawberries, syrup.
Thats "out of the box" a bit for a Comfort Suites and people would love it.
Then again, you prolly dont have a large capacity dishwasher so that f**s up that idea. hehe
You could always just work a deal with your local village inn or dennys and give the bastards coupons at check in. =) I think a breakfast deal at denny's is like $2.99 and im sure you could get that down to half for the sheer number of customers youd be sending their way. Im sure you could work a buck fiddy into your room rates.

He already said he includes instant oatmeal he just forgot to mention it. Croissants are expensive and they don't keep well for long. You can freeze bread or bagels for a few extra days, Croissants don't do well in the freezer and they can't be vacuum sealed either.
