I'm reading the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, interspersed with the original Star Wars Trilogy...

edit: His Dark Materials: In an epic trilogy, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to a world parallel to our own, but with a mysterious slant all its own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn't destroyed first. Join Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest as they embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventures of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands. (From Amazon since I haven't read it all yet!)
On the horizon:

Eragon/Eldest by Christopher Paolini: Here's a great big fantasy that you can pull over your head like a comfy old sweater and disappear into for a whole weekend. Christopher Paolini began Eragon when he was just 15, and the book shows the influence of Tolkien, of course, but also Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, and perhaps even Wagner in its traditional quest structure and the generally agreed-upon nature of dwarves, elves, dragons, and heroic warfare with magic swords.

Eragon, a young farm boy, finds a marvelous blue stone in a mystical mountain place. Before he can trade it for food to get his family through the hard winter, it hatches a beautiful sapphire-blue dragon, a race thought to be extinct. Eragon bonds with the dragon, and when his family is killed by the marauding Ra'zac, he discovers that he is the last of the Dragon Riders, fated to play a decisive part in the coming war between the human but hidden Varden, dwarves, elves, the diabolical Shades and their neanderthal Urgalls, all pitted against and allied with each other and the evil King Galbatorix. Eragon and his dragon Saphira set out to find their role, growing in magic power and understanding of the complex political situation as they endure perilous travels and sudden battles, dire wounds, capture and escape.

In spite of the engrossing action, this is not a book for the casual fantasy reader. There are 65 names of people, horses, and dragons to be remembered and lots of pseudo-Celtic places, magic words, and phrases in the Ancient Language as well as the speech of the dwarfs and the Urgalls. But the maps and glossaries help, and by the end, readers will be utterly dedicated and eager for the next book (From Amazon).

Angry Black White Boy by Adam Mansbach. (bought it for students; I need to read it first :p) ANGRY BLACK WHITE BOY is a chronicle of the effects hip-hop has had on America, racial politics, suburban youth, and Macon Detornay as he enters his freshman year at Columbia University.

Macon is a man on a mission to be known as "the downest white boy." For years, he has paid his dues to Black culture and Black folks, earning respect in most circles with his lay-it-on-the-line speeches, innovative poetry, and his hatred for "the man." Nevertheless, Macon isn't content to just be down. He smells a revolution brewing, and he is at its forefront - accidentally on purpose.

Mansbach's story enraptured me with its humor, lilt, and permutation of racial biases, issues, and scope. By creating a character who was totally different from, and almost antithetic to, any other I had ever read about, Mansbach won me over and held me captive in a story I had yet to hear. The writing was unpredictable and almost improvisational, and it fit the plot of this story without overshadowing the central themes and characters. ANGRY BLACK WHITE BOY gleams with brilliance, and I will never forget it
(From Amazon).

I'm reading the first of his three books, The Golden Compass. I didn't know there was a companion book to the series LOL

The compass--alethiometer as it is called in the book--is rather cool Smile

Would it be a problem to ask you guys to give a quick summary of one or more of the books you are reading? I can google, yes, but it's easier to just jot a note when I'm reading the forum for later research Smile

Accounting Principles, Ch 16. Long-term Liabilities.

Bonds -- Intrest-bearing notes payable.
-- Issued to obtain large amounts of long-term capital
-- No stock-holder controls.
-- there are 4 familes of bond types.
-- Board of directors set the number of, the face value and interest rate.

Bonds are accouted for as a long-term liability. These accounts remain open at year end. The intrest payable is a short-term liability and these accounts are closed with the other expense accounts at year end and applied to the revenues to help produce the Net Income/Loss statement.

Shall I continue? Interested? I think this was a $145 book.

Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk
Fashion model at the center of attention, living the "glory" life, suffers a freeway accident, and is left unable to speak, and missing a lower jaw. Latches onto Queen Supreme Brandy Alexander, almost a "real" woman, who teaches her to forget her past, and reinvent a new life. Might be a "gay" novel, but I love Palahniuk's writing, and this is one of his better books.

Everything Bad is Good For You by Steven Johnson
Found this in a PC Gamer mag, examines the relationship between rising intellegence over the years and media. Specifically video games, television, and the internet. Was a suprisingly easy read, sounds like the guy is a gamer himself.

-- reworked with descriptions. =)

Dwarven Nations Trilogy - Dan Parkinson - Dragonlance

A brief history of the Dwarves of Krynn. The Calnar get invaded by humans and become the Hylar, searching for a new home. Theiwar, Daewar, Daergar, Aghar, Klar, and Neidar are fighting human refugees from the Dragon Wars against the Silvanesti. Hylar come and together the 7 tribes of dwarves build Thorbardin. Second book tells of the construction of the Mage Towers and how the Dwarves are so resistant to magic that the wizards fail. The third and best tells of the first Dwarven King, Derkin, and the events surrounding the Swordsheath Scroll at the end of the Kinslayer wars.

Excellent series.

dorfs rool

Gonna reread Elven Nations and then go through the Dragons, the Kagonesti, the Irda, the Gully Dwarves (Hilarious!)

1633, Eric Flint & David Weber

Sequel to 1632, A West Virginia mining town circa 2000 gets transported to medieval Germany, smack in the middle of the 30 years war.

A Briefer History of Time, Stephen Hawking

Hi, physics, astronomy, quantum goofiness. A Brief history of Time updated with less confusing advanced math.

Hair of the Alien, Bill Chalker.

Some dude got raped by alien chicks who left hair around his penis which was subsequently DNA tested. (non fiction)

New Rules, Bill Maher

Entertaining, well distilled, socio-political commentary. Don't read if you're a hardcore Republican or Democrat. He probably hates you.

The Player of Games, Iain M. Banks

More Culture SF, Awesome. I won't spoil it.

Also chewed through volumes 1-7 of the Hellsing manga recently. Uber-Vampires ftw.

mein kampf

So horribly written, the man jumps around so much. Not an easy book to read. Times must have been really bad for germans in the 30s to like this piece of shit. Does pretty much explain everything he was gonna do in the future though.

nah this is in english and the guy who did it actually set it up to make sense, ie not direct translations. Its just horrible reading, the way AH jumps around and randomly starts talking about something then does a 360 about what he is talking about mid paragraph.

Isn't "His Dark Materials" the trilogy that brought Eduin to tears, over and over again? Maybe I should check it out.
