My cats hate their new LitterMaid litter box.
The small piles of shit on my bed today when I came home from work confirm this.
f**k.

I would be scared to get into something that looks like a photo copying machine too.

I blew almost $500 on one of those when they were the new hot thing. Even though it was set not to scoop until about 2 minutes after they stepped out and walked away, they were scared to go near it.
Don't mention that when you post it on ebay or yahoo auctions.

Yep, that's precisely the problem I ran into. The cats are scared shitless of the thing, no pun intended. In retrospect I think I figured out the problem. The constant raking of the litter box depletes the level of sand very quickly, so I think the well ran dry, and as you know cats hate nothing more than to not be able to shit in sand they can't dig in afterwards.
I refilled it generously and I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for this in the future. It annoys me the "FILL LINE" on the thing is not very high at all.. it's maybe 3 inches. My cats like a full sandbox. It's annoying me I will have to be refilling the litter box with more sand instead of having to scoop poop out. I thought this was supposed to make taking care of cats easier?

at the cost of sounding gay...
use those litter pearls and a covered box. i travel so i'm gone 5 days or more at a time, and that stuff only gets changed once a month or 2. no problems whats so ever.

I had one of those for a year or two; my cats didn't mind it a bit. It doesn't actually do anything until a couple of minutes after they get out of it. The only annoying thing is it gets kind of hard to clean the plastic after awhile, and the motor isn't really strong enough so sometimes it would get stuck. Finally burned out after the warrenty expired and I didn't get another one. The little plastic containers you have to use are kind of expensive too.

if your cats are skittish and affraid of things like the vacuum, this is not a very good box to get.
just get one of those kitty domes with scoopable clumping litter. its really not that much of a chore to scoop it once a day and replace the entire box worth now and again.
its really no more of a daily chore task then brushing your teeth or doing your dishes. your kitties are worth it.
