k, so i downoaded du meter, a program which tells you exactly what upload/dowload speed you have on the network card of your choosing.

The nice bit is you can see how fast you can copy files over your network.
This is where it gets odd.

According to said program i can downoad from the net at 206kB/sec. Which is what my ISP gives me (ADSL).
So it is accurate.

Now when i copy a large amount of files from my download machine to my viewing box (about 40gigs at a time) it never goes over 7/8mB/sec.

I have a 100mb network card on all my PC's, and a 100mb switch.
So wtf isn't it copying at 100mb???

100Mbit is a theoretical max.

All I get is about 7-8 as well. that's about all you will get

It's windows file transfer protocols fault, not your adapters.

Use another protocol, like ftp if you have the option to run an ftp server on one of the computers.

I do that and it's amazing the speed difference you see.

Windows sucks ass for networking shit man, I thought you all knew that =/

Yeah it does suck but it's the only easy viable solution when you are a gameaddict like me sadly Razz

I got a linux server running i'll try to setup ftp on there maybe that will speed things up

There are other things involved while transferring a LAN.
First off, 100mbit = 12.5MB max transfer rate if there were no other bottlenecks.

The other things that come into play, are the network protocol used to transfer, as well as access/transfer speeds of the hard drives.

7-8MB transfer is pretty much the max that anyone gets. Some may get 10MB, that they are few and far between.

Want faster? Go gigabyte. They're getting cheaper every day. Razz

yeah, i was thinking about going gigabit. but replacing 7 network cards, 2 switches and a hub really doesn't apeal to me right now.

Faster is fun..but it costs a shitload

A world of difference......this took seconds to transfer, and would have taken minutes using windows file transfer
