|
|
|
Randomly my computer will just freeze. It happens in BF2, WoW, and even while just doing random shit in XP. It's rare when it happens, but after it freezes, if I attempt to restart the computer, there is an audible beeping noise and no image is displayed on the monitor. The keyboard lights come on and stuff, however.
I usually have to wait about 3-5 minutes before I can power the computer back up, and after that it works fine. Crashes seem to occur every few hours.
I'm thinking it might be a heat problem, but I have fans and shit, and it's not like I'm running some ultra high end shit that needs uber cooling, it's just a P4 2.6GHz and a generic GeForce 6600 video card that I've got. I have a case fan, a slot fan, and the CPU fan. Is there any way to check that all of them are running short of opening up the case and just looking?
Any other ideas would be appreciated, thx.
Edit: I'm also using a 450W brand name power supply, and it has a power meter on the front that indicates my system only uses around 250W at peak usage, so I don't think it's a power supply issue.

audible beeping noise? Are those POST failure beeps? If so it'll be easy to diagnose whats the problem.
Sounds like a typical case of overheating to me, but ya never know. POST beeps should be able to tell you, or when you do get to be able to boot back up, go into the bios and goto hardware monitor section and look at your temps. Easier way is when it shuts down to touch your CPU block and see how hot it is (mind you just touch then pull back, cuz if its overheating it will burn the f**k out of you if you leave your finger there).

There are lots of freeware CPU temp monitoring tools. Yours probably locks up around 80 or more celcius

i used to have that problem with a computer i owned in college... i fixed it by taking one side of the case off to let the ambient air flow better throughout. a small room fan also helped.
problem was an overheating CPU btw.. old athlon, 1.6ghz i think

There's a program called Motherboard Monitor. Used to be great for this, and you can set it to log your CPU temperature every n seconds to a file, so after a crash you can go back and look and see what the temp was around the time of the crash.
If your power supply sucks or is just too small it may also cause weird issues. Your video card may also be overheating, separately from the CPU, and harder to measure unless you get a thermal probe/thermometer.

This would have taken less time than the post you made. Seriously, 2 screws.. can open it while it's running and see if any fans have seized.. Could take the time then too to clean out the dust/dirt.
But that is just me
