Weightlifter's accidental death sparks warning
By GORDY HOLT
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

BELLEVUE -- The death Sunday of a 20-year-old weightlifter who had been working out alone with free weights at the home of a friend brought a warning yesterday from a local fitness-equipment dealer.

Never work out alone with free weights unless you have the proper safety equipment. There should always be another person, a spotter, in the room to help if you get into trouble.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office said Kevin M. Moore suffocated to death when he couldn't lift a 135-pound barbell off his neck.

"People often come in and tell me they don't lift that much weight, so they don't need safety equipment," said Tom Woodman, manager of The Fitness Shop in Bellevue.

"But even if it's just 10 pounds and it's more than you can lift at the end of a set of repetitions, you're in trouble."

Free weights are the least complicated weight-training devices but can be deadly. Modern weight machines use 5- to 10-pound iron plates stacked one on top of another and threaded onto vertical pipes. The user pulls on a cable to lift the stack. If he lets go, the weights slide safely down out of harm's way.

"There is equipment available now that can make free weights just as safe as a weight machine if used correctly," Woodman said.

Woodman described a "cage" comprising four vertical standards, two on either side of the weightlifter's bench. Each pair is equipped with a horizontal bar that can be adjusted to a point just above bench/neck height.

"If, worst case, you happen to go just a little bit too hard, find yourself in trouble and can't put that bar back up on its stand, you can let it sit on the two (safety) bars," he said.

Ok, #1- Why you even post this on RP kinda wierd for here.

#2- How can he not get 135 off him? I've died with that before, you can roll it off your body. I seriously don't see how. It's hard to even balance it on your neck, I seriously don't see how you can die from it unless you tried to put it on the hook, missed, and it dropped and broke his neck.
But they say he suffocated? Man, seriously, I can't imagine how this is possible. Most people in shape can bench 135 without any prior weight training. This most of been some Somalian dude or something. I don't get it.

I dunno man, I think there is more to his death than the article. I simply can't comprehend death from 135 unless you passed out.

Hehe, if I ever get crushed to death by a barbell (not likely) I hope it has more than 135 pounds on it Smile.

I'm not sure. people sometimes hold their breath during a repetition and it causes them to pass out in the middle. I'm guessing that's what happened. Then he was already unconscious and just slipped away. Man, that's a silly way to go.

135 pounds after a couple sets gets pretty hard to lift off yourself, especially if you're a small guy. Yeah the guy is stupid for working with a barbell with out a spotter, he could of easily done the same weight with dumbells and not run the risk of chocking himself.

It sure can. But I was able to sit up and just roll it down my body and then pull it off when it happened to me.

135 lbs isnt that much, but if you are new to benching it might be a lot for you. When I started benching 2 years ago i couldnt even lift 135, but now its nothing more than a warmup set.

Although most people who bench know when to end a set to avoid this, some days you're just more tired than usual. I've experienced a rare set or two on days like that which got me stuck needing help putting the weight back up. In a situation like that, if you run out of gas with the weight half lifted, its really hard to muster enough strength to put the weight back without help. Lucky for me I work out at a gym and somebody will usually notice if you're alone and the weight isn't moving for a couple seconds. I've never had it totally give out and lay on me though, usually I can hold it off me long enough to get someone's attention. I wouldn't even consider lifting alone in my house because if you do get stuck, you're f****d if it's more weight than you can shake off.

when I used to weight lift, my trainer explained like day 1. dont clip the weights on. they have to be free to dump off one end of the bar if you get into trouble. If I am interpreting this right, if he had obeyed that little safety precaution, all he had to do was roll his body to one side, tip and bar and have them slide off.

What I want to know is how the bar was on his neck? Proper form dictates on pressing for one to bring the bar down at your nipples. Sounds like a moron if the bar was anywhere near his neck.

its sounds as if he missed the rack and the bar fell on his neck. normally when i bench the bar goes across me chest not neck. it could have crushed his neck and thats why he suffacated.

It clearly states he suffocated, meaning there was no way it fell on his neck, 135 to the jugular is gonna break that shit or mess it up good. He must of simply passed out midrep. Landed on his chest, rolled to his neck. Died.

Suffocation / broken neck are so seperate that it would be too stupid to mess up. That like saying he bled to death instead of having a heart-attack. For all I know he could of been doing some type of Auto-erotic asphixiation(sp).

thats the point...when it comes to a crime scene the cause of death is not "known" until it can be verifed by an artopsy. He might have been shot in the head but the cause of death was suffatcation. BTW a broken neck doesnt always kill ya. his neck could have been crushed but the cause was suffaction.

Alternate Moral of the Story : Work out with imaginary weights because those can't possibly crush your neck.

do 135 pounds 15 times when you're out of shape and not a fat ass and then you can come back and talk about "how no one could have died from 135 pounds lollze".

To be blunt most people regardless of weight work at the exact same threshold of difficulty until the later stages where it becomes more mental. It's obvious this person passed out got his neck crushed. Neither has to do with physicality, just dumb luck. He could of died taking a shower.

I think it would be more accurate to say Aimras is the Maelstorm of the EQ board. Mael has been around much longer.

I think Isriam might be the Eduin of the EQ board...
