How would one go about that, in the game world? I ask because in the original source – booth the Tolkien books and the Peter Jackson movies – money wasn't around, and the economy was not only a minor part of the world, but actually a non-existent one. Introducing the classical MMO economy would mess with the expected feel of the world, don't you agree?

To a point, yes, I do agree. However, making money (and spending it) is one of the cornerstones of online gaming, fantasy or not, and I don't think there's any way of avoiding it here. Therefore, it'd be easier if you didn't think of the accent on the financial ruining the Middle-Earth mood, and instead think of it as redefining the world.
