Your father collects a certain brand of watch so that makes you knowledgeable? OK.....

No he collects watches, it just happens that he has more Omega watches than any other quality brand because they represent the best value.

kemble wrote:

You really are showing your ignorance on the subject in this little gem of a paragraph. Tag & Omega don't even make movements! They buy them from ETA and Zenith. They use off the shelf movements slap a TAG rotor on it, and toss them in a case they design (but which is also made by someone else).

Omega manufacture their own movements. I have no idea about the TAG process but given I'd need to see proof that they didn't as it wouldn't make much sense to buy in movements where they are then assembled side by side with the in house movements for Omega, Rolex, etc..

kemble wrote:

Please show me an Omega complication type watch (if you know what that is). I don't me a simple chronograph... I'm talking a tourbillion or perpetual calendar, etc.

You mean like the Omega Central Tourbillion?

BTW, fyi Rolex are made in the same factory by the same people who make Omega and TAG Heuer (and Swatch which was their response to Sieko and co in the far east). They're all part of the Swiss Watch Company.

And they are all crap. What a coincidence!

This seems to be a bit more enlightening about your posts in this thread. The problem is clearly that you dislike SWC to the exclusion of facts.

I like gadgets, its looks gagety. I have 4 other watches for different occasions. I like this one exactly for all the shit thats going on.

And no.....besides the date, the second hand, its waterproofness and the time, I don't use any of the other options.

Most times I don't even look at the watch. I look at my phone for the time and date.

Sorry, I guess I'm not evolved enough to care about tan lines on my wrist.

Well, I assumed that you wore the watch for aesthetic purposes (its a good looking watch), but I just don't like wrist tan lines.

Jeesh, I'm not trying to insult you with every comment i make (it only seems that way).

I have a watch to tell time. I just happen to like this one more than others, atm. I never go out without it so my tan lines are hidden. Thank god.

No Shit. It's a little clock that goes around your wrist and tells you what time it is. When I was in high school I had a $20 Timex that I abused the hell out of. I slept with it on, I wore it in the shower, I did outdoor manual labor wearing it. I got it dirty, muddy, rained and snowed on, and it lasted 5 years. It's a freakin miracle that companies like Rolex managed to convince anyone that it is reasonable to pay $1000+ for a watch, let alone $10,000. For the price of a $2500 watch, I could just buy 100 Timexes, throw one away every time it started to look beat up, and still save money over the guy with the "starter watch" who is out $2500 if the band breaks and he loses it.

I guess some people are impressed by them, but I'm not. If I see somebody wearing a rolex I think that they are stupid for wasting money on a worthless piece of crap that is only for showing off to shallow people who are impressed by that sort of thing.

I like my fossil. My right arm has grown in strength and size since I started toting that sucker around. Of course, a pin fell out of it some odd months ago, making it rather hard to wear...

-edit-
By "right arm" i think i meant "left arm." It's been so long since I've warn it (since the pin fell out and the wrist band fell apart and all) I can't even remember which wrist i wore it on. But it was the left. Definitely. I think.

I have always thought of Tag > Omega, maybe its just me. I have not seen many Tag watchs that start around $200 or so as you say.

I have had my Tag watch for about 11 years i paid $1500 for it back then and the current style is still around $1100 or so.

Its really what you like, don't break yourself trying to buy that jacobs watch if you are still living with mom and dad, there are better ways to spend your money.

Nothing wrong with TAG or Omegas at all. I even said it in my first post. Hell, I have both. My Omega I don't really wear, was my grandfather's....

$3,000 $4,000 or $5,000 is not THAT big of a deal. A good mechanical watch will last you forever and your children. Oh and you aren't out the $2,500 for the 'starter' watch if you lose it. Its called homeowners insurance.

Its not about 'impressing' other people. Hell most people don't even recognize the brand of watch I wear on a daily basis (Kelek). It could cost $50 for all they know. I agree some people buy a Rolex so other people think they are the shit but not everyone is like that.

I see watches as a luxury item.... I don't wear any other 'jewelry'. I'm not into rings, chains, bracelets, etc. Some people like cars, others like gold chains, motorcycles, mountain bikes, guns, legos, home theater equipment, etc, etc. Anything can sound stupid to someone else.... I guess we should all walk around in burlap sacks, drive a yugo and live in identical refrigerator boxes. Wouldn't want anyone to think we are shallow.

I really like my Citizen. Paid around $400 for it about 6 years ago and have never had a problem. Think it has like a 15 year warranty or something.

Some of the best automatic watches for the money are found here:

http://www.pmwf.com/Watches/T20PMW%20List%20Table.htm

One of my favorite automatic watches for the money are the Seiko Criteria Automatic like the one shown here that can be had on ebay for around $150:

http://www.pmwf.com/Watches/WATCHSALES03/SeikoCriteriaSNZC39K1BlueHorizontalDay/SeikoCriteriaSNZC39K1BlueHorizontalDay.htm

The most underrated swiss which is undervalued and is a bargain compared to overpriced watches like Rolex and Omega is the Oris Day/Date F1 Automatic. This watch is built like a tank and is very heavy and thick. It can be had if your look around for about $550. f*****g tremendous watch with a sapphire crystal, glass back design with a 25 jewel automatic movement with a 38 hour power reserve.

Omega, Tag and most swiss automatic watch companies stopped making their own movements some time ago. Most are made by ETA now.

I thought about delving into who has bought who in the swiss movement industry but it wasn't worth debating with fuckhead Eduin when he started going on about needing proof. Etching your company name onto a rotor someone else made, is not engineering Smile

Also, there is nothing wrong with a company using an ETA, Zenith, Chronoswiss, or other movement. 90% of swiss watches are made this way. It doesn't reduce the quality of the watch at all and I'm sure it lowers the price due to economies of scale. However, it is unfortunate in some respects because it reduces the uniqueness between watch manufacturers.

P.S. I ordered this last night. I'll see how it does for a beater.

I have a nice seiko with a darker blue face and silver band. its very nice imo, and althought its not true "look at how much I have to waste" status, it is effective and good quality, only set me back 300 as opposed to several thousand.. i think they are a good low to mid priced brand.
