Would it be too unreasonable to hope that Warhammer online turns out to be less about item and looting and twinking than World of Warcraft was? And more about, you know, the actual game play itself, about putting the "war" back in "warcraft (or back in "warhammer", you know what I mean)?

Unreasonable, no, I hope it's not unreasonable… to hope. In theory, WAR should feature a much more active and immersive world, rather than one that has you going fropm one auction to another. Fingers Xed.

I am pretty sure that WAR will be more about game-play than the acquisition of items. This was emphasized the Mythic's past titles and it seems to me that WAR is going to become an improved version of the game formulae used in DAoC, for example.
I think that people who enjoy PvP are going to enjoy WAR most though. Mythic usually considers PvP to be the end-game content, and expect their fan-base to participate constantly. PvE players would be happier to keep their WoW account imo.
