Why not get a PCI Express video card/motherboard? I don't know how much difference it will make, but that seems to be the way things are going and buying a new AGP board now might make it hard to upgrade in the future.

a) There are no retail PCIe motherboards for A64 yet. They won't be out till late 2004 or early 2005 at the earliest.
b) There are no "good" PCIe video cards avialable to buy atm. Only thing out atm that you can buy off storeshelves and online retailers are last generation cards (such as the Nvidia PCX-5900 (which is a normal fx5900 in PCIe flavor) or the ATi x600 (which is a Radeon 9600XT in PCIe flavor).
Your setup looks great Doc. I'd personally rather go with a Nforce 3 250 chipset motherboard, but your choice is still great.

I agree with the ncforce3 250 mobo. other than that though it looks good, also really expensive.

Another reason why I'd go with the Nforce motherboard is the onboard sound. Nvidia puts some really good APU's (audio proccessing unit) on their motherboards. The previous generations SoundStorm API was incredible and it gave Creative SB Audigy trash a run for its money. The newer generation (Nforce3 250 and soon Nforce4) have incredible sound systems aswell.. and you'd be saving some cash cause you wouldn't need to buy a s****y Creative soundcard. Could use that extra 80 bucks you'd be saving and buy a 6800 Ultra instead or some high speed OCZ ram.
Or hell go for a socket939 motherboard and a Amd64 3500+

Just went from a 1 ghz P3 to a AMD 2700+ this weekend as well as from a GeForce 3 to GeForcefx 5200, not a huge jump on the vid card, but it was good enough. I had to be a bargain buyer .

Don't buy it in pieces, just put your money away and buy it all at once when you have the cash saved up. I guarantee that by then all that stuff will cost less than it does now, and you can get new stuff (like a PCI Express video card/motherboard) by then.

Or he could've read Meeatsu's post up above about why PCIe is a bad idea right now.

I agree, no point in rushing out and buying the newest just yet. For one DDR2 atm is a bit over priced atm and your not gonna see this super huge increase that most are thinking they are gonna see (its just ram =/ Congrats you can load Windows XP faster after you reboot!). Also great, you want a PCIexpress mobo, but where exactly you planning on getting a PCIe video card that is worth buying at the moment? There isn't exactly a huge selection out there and the cards that are out are a pita to actually find.
2 Options
a) Wait. Let the new upcoming technology actually hit the market before you decide. Wait till Nvidia, VIA, and SIS release their PCIe/DDR2 supported a64 chipset s939 motherboards before you decide. Wait till PCIe videocards actually hit mainstream (sometime this fall, first the Nvidia 6800 and its varients and the ATI x800 and its varients.. then the cheaper cards like the Geforce 6600 and its varients and so forth). Wait till DDR2 memory manufactorers get their ram all figured out and priced at a price that makes them worth using.
b) Upgrade with current technology. Absolutely nothing wrong with this. AGP is still fast as f**k. 8x AGP was barely even tapped into before PCIe was introduced, and its already being pushed asside. A high end computer using the current technology isn't going to need to be replaced for a few years even with the new shit coming out, especially if you have a Geforce 6800 or ATi x800.
All depends on how much dough you got layin around =x

Ok I guess I don't upgrade like everyone else in this thread then. When I upgrade I get at least a 2x power boost or what point is there in upgrading? Why would you upgrade only to totally be outdated in 3 months? I mean it's a whole new standard coming around the corner why would you buy almost outdated technology?

The thing is the "whole new standards coming around" are NOT actually in play yet. You will not see what PCIe can really do until late 2005 early 2006 when Nvidia releases the NV50 and ATi releases the r500. That is a year to a year and half away. There is absolutely no difference in raw speed (benchmark, 3Dgame aswell as 3Dapp) between a AGP 6800 and a PCIe 6800 same with the x800. Go to google and look up some comparison benchmarks. PCIe is too new and its not even fully worked out yet (evidence by both ATi and Nvidia cheating by using a AGP bridges in their chipset design instead of true PCIe, again if you don't understand that go look up AGP->PCIe bridges in google). The thing is PCIe just doesn't really matter right this second. Upgrading to it (the same with DDR2) this early is a bit foolish. Let the shit soak in a bit, let prices drop, and let the shit actually hit the market.

Yeah that's what they said when we finially got rid of ISA cards too! Give it a year PCI will be nothing but a legacy slot. I usually try to look ahead for future upgradeability. If there is not really a difference in performance you might as well look toward the future. Of course some people aren't looking at having the fastest system on the block so it dosen't really matter.
