|
|
|
Ok, so I got a new video card. After sending the first one back because I thought it didn't work when in reality all I was doing wrong was not plugging in the power adapter on the card to the power supply, I finally got it to work.
Now, for some inexplicable reason, when playing a game after a while, the screen will hang for a while, or the computer will freeze and reboot.
I'm thinking I need a fan card next to the video card and/or a new power supply, anyone else have any other suggestions?

Make sure it's seated properly on the motherboard. sometimes that happens when there's some sort of feedback.

Dont suppose its a 6800GT with the newest drivers? If so that would be the problem. The newest drivers available for the 6800 cards is causing them to run hotter than normal and will get fixed next driver release.

Haha, that's funny. Software causing the hardware to overheat.

Well duh, software is what makes hardware overheat, if you just plugin your computer and send power to everything it wont do much, and prolly wont overheat.

chaintech Geforce 6600 256 AGP card
running nvidia 71.84 drivers
stock 250W power supply on my case.
Taking off the side of the case seems to have alleviated/eliminated the problem at least =D But odd graphical glitches are showing up in WoW which never occurred on my old Ti4200, with the same drivers. Odd

I know, I know.
The more work processors do the hotter they get. Maybe the driver has some 'bad' loops or something that makes them do more work than they need to.

Great, thank you. I think I will order a new PSU and a fan card from newegg later today. Think 450W is enough?

Thats what I bought.. check the book that came with the card, it should state the wattage used by the card.
I didn't know what the hell was going on either until Grudus told me it was the power.

Nvidia 6000 series are very power hungry. I had to buy a "true" 480 for my 6800 ultra OC from BFG. Chances are 250 isn't enough.

Oh my god, 250 watts now a days is nothing. My computer is running at a 400 and I am thinking of getting a 500watt and putting that bad boy in there. My machine likes the power, so I will most likey do that ovver the weekend.
