recommend: geforce 6800

a geforce 4 > a geforce 3

the reason they are cheaper i think is because they are manufactured by more companies

with 500$ the geforce fx6800 is within your grasp!

i doubt your computer would run incredibly faster with it compared to like a geforce fx5900, but im sure you will notice the difference over a geforce 3

it all depends what you want to do though .. with pci express going to be the new standard anything you buy now is going to be outdated in a year or so =\

i'd buy a new vid card

high end gforce 4

and another stick of 512 ram

that would beef you up for about 350 bucks maybe

id say you wouldnt really notice a difference between a geforce 3 and geforce 4

if you dont really want to spend all the cash on a geforce fx6800 id recommend you just get a geforce fx 5900 (about 180$ maybe less dependant on the version, any version is fine)

you will notice a big difference and you can use that extra cash on more ram

what kind of ram do you have anyway? DDR and RDRAM as far as im aware you can put different types / sizes of ram in as long as they are not paired

what about if I swap processors on my moms computer, she has a 2.4 ghz compared to my 1.6 gig. Will I notice much of a performance difference. EX: Painkiller fights run in slow motion when there are more than 5 monsters spawned.

500? thats easy. But first...

The Geforce 4 MX is a piece of dog shit, wait no its worse then dog shit. Any of the Geforce line that uses MX is a worthless garbarge. Even the top line Geforce 4 MX 44something or another is about equal to a low end Geforce 2. The Geforce 3 is way faster Wink

You also want to stay away if possible from the entire Geforce 4 line these days. For one, they don't support DirectX9 correctly if at all. The Geforce 4 ti4200 and greater are pretty quick cards, but whats the point if they don't support current day APIs, yah know? The FX cards had some problems for a bit but most of their DX9 problems are worked out with latest driver releases and are stable.

As Overon said tho, I would go with a Geforce 5900 for like 180-200. Get 2 sticks of 512 or atleast some kind of configuration inwhich you can get 1gig of ram and see if you can get that 2.4ghz proccessor. I'd stay away from the 6800 for right now as even that 2.4ghz processor would just create a bottleneck for it. You really need a 3ghz or equivilant processor to make having a 6800 or x800 worthwhile.

the 2.4 gig processor might not be compatible with your motherboard .. be prepared for that .. as thermal paste is a w***e

i had a 1.4 gig p4 in my old comp that died and the processor's connection to the motherboard was much bigger than the one i have now

You could get a 5900 as suggested for roughly 200 plus 160 for 1 gig of ram, which puts you at 360, so you'd have another 140 left over and provided your mobo supported it, and for $135 you could get a 2.4 P4 with 1MB cache ... so you'd still have 5 bucks left for porno or candy bars ...

I've done that...

When mem prices started to really fall I thought 100 for 128 meg SDRAM was cheap, I had a 486 with 20 meg of ram and everyone wondered why I needed so much... this was pre-pentium of course
