Hey, I normally use tight vnc, but it has a few things about it that i don't like, one being the annoying icon in the taskbar, the next being that it strips the desktop off the computer you're connecting to.

I hate having to log off and back on to get my desktop back.

Are there any good and free alternatives that work the same but would bother me less?

Have you tried either WinVNC or UltraVNC?

no, are they free and worth using?

A web interface is a big plus

WinVNC is free, but no web interface.

UltraVNC I believe is free, but I haven't poked around with it. It was recommened to me by a client who was having nothing but trouble with PcAnywhere.

the best alternative to VNC is using the computer from the same room

I don't remember which particular variant we use at work (either WinVNC or TightVNC), but I went digging around because I didn't like the taskbar bit either, and I found somewhere in the faq settings to disable the taskbar icon. Then it turns out my boss wants the icon there to remind people that we're watching them, soo.... okay.

How can I hide the system tray icon in WinVNC?

Win32 TightVNC includes code from TridiaVNC distributions, and therefore it should include Tridia's modification to disable the tray icon. Here is a quote from TridiaVNC 1.3.3 announce:

* Added registry flag to cleanly disable the tray icon on all platforms and in all modes without affecting other settings. The default is "0" and indicates that the tray icon should not be disabled. A value of "1" will suppress the tray icon for all users.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\DisableTrayIcon DWORD "0"
HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\DisableTrayIcon DWORD "1"

Thus, to disable the tray icon, you should start the "regedit" utility from the command line, go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3\ folder, and create a DWORD parameter with the name "DisableTrayIcon" and the value "1". Then, after restarting WinVNC, the icon will not be shown anymore.

But please note that hiding the icon is usually not a good idea. For example, if you want to restrict users from changing the server Properties, it might be better to use the AllowProperties setting. For more information, see the description of "AllowProperties", "AllowShutdown" and "AllowEditClients" options in the RealVNC documentation.

What do you mean "strips the desktop?" You mean the desktop background? If so, that's an option in TightVNC.

It's easier to be in 2 places at once.

I do shit on my home pc that needs doing, and life is grand, saves me time from having to do it at home later that night =p

i mostly care about the background not disappearing

I just don't like icons in my taskbar, all those nview s***s and stuff, I always disable that shit.

If there's no reason for it to be there on a regular basis, I get rid of it =p
