Holy f*****g shit. So, some guy dies from complications/defects/etc in a painkiller, and his family gets $229 million? Good god that is alot of money...

edit: Whoops! Forgot the link...
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,166255,00.html

And yes, that's what the jury decided, not the judge (I didn't realize the judge usually reduces it).

Without seeing a link to the story, I'm guessing that was a jury awarded amount, which frequently gets reduced by the presiding judge.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/19/news/fortune500/vioxx/index.htm?cnn=yes

Quote:

The verdict held Merck liable for the death.

The jury awarded more than $250 million in total damages -- a $24 million penalty to Carol Ernst for mental anguish and loss of companionship and $229 million in punitive damages.

Ernst's Houston-based lawyer, Mark Lanier, was seeking $40.4 million in damages and after the verdict said he expected the punitive damages award to be reduced according to Texas law.

Merck said it would appeal the decision. "We believe that the plaintiff did not meet the standard set by Texas law to prove Vioxx caused Mr. Ernst's death," said Jonathan Skidmore, a member of Merck's legal defense team, according to a statement released by Merck.

$229 million in punitive damages? Not likely. She'll probably end up with an award in the 30 - 50 million range if she's lucky.

Back up your claim or shut your hole, unless spoken to.

i just hope to see a jury award like 10 billion soon Smile

i did watch a very good report on how legal firms
search out and try to have these cases in the smallest towns
they can, to get the big bucks, even the ones that don't make the headlines

It doesn't f**k them over at all, thats the problem. When you award a case like this all it does is increase the next 115 million pills by $2 each increasing a 30 day perscription cost by $60. Afterwards people are still buying the pills so they leave the price as it is. If you want to hurt a company with deep pockets you need to do something besides award a large amount of money to a person since they can afford to take a short term hit in order to actually profit more in the long term.
