My friend said I could get a cell phone from one company and unlock it so I could use another company's service plan and that although frowned upon it is not illegal. Does anyone have any information they could give me to enlighten me on this whole thing? I want a Verizon phone but I'd like to keep using ATT. Thanks in advance.

depends on which phone/service. pretty much what i'd recomend is finding which phone you want, then finding the big msg board for that phone. there's usually a thread or 2 on how to unlock. There's a good msg board for most mfgs and services at http://www.howardforums.com/
some other boards
nextel phones msg board - www.ideninsider.com
samsung phones http://www.mobiledia.com/forum/forum9.html
i'd ask around or look on these boards. these are some pretty techy guys when it comes to phones

cant go between att and verizon without basically opening the phone and changing the entire circuit board.
ATT works on a TDMA chipset frequency which is compatible with GSM.
Verizon works on a CDMA chipset frequency which is only used by sprint a verizon,, cdma is nice but sucks cause you cant use over seas where tdma phones you can.

Only GSM based phones can be easily unlocked, and its something that's done quite a bit in the rest of the world where GSM is 'the' mobile standard.

So far the T720 looks good, but I think the kids posting unlocked it and hooked it up with Verizon service as opposed to Cingular. I'd add this onto it if I got it :p
