ok, assume that both of these are attainable for $5500, which is the better buy and why?
Yamaha FZ6
or
Suzuki SVS 650
Ok, answer time!

Suzuki IMHO is a better bike. Although I don't ride standards very often, I have a friend who owns a SV and the thing is fun as hell. The SV650 will be slightly more power (599cc's vs 650cc's) and with the V-Twin have enough torque to be fun.
Personally for a guy your size either will be a great starter bike, although I think it will only last you maybe one season before you are bored of it and will want something with a bit more power.
Test drive, if it comes down to it -- or at least sit on both bikes and see which one 'feels' better.
Or f**k em both and buy a GSXR 1000 =)

I'd say get the Yamaha but I'm a lil biased. Gonna get a 2003 YZF-R6 after the summer. I'm riding a Suzuki 1200S atm and it is a nice bike. Yamaha and Suzuki both have quality bikes so just sit on them both and test ride them if you can and take whichever fits you better. The R6 is just right for me if not a lil cramped at 5'10" and its gonna be a b***h on insurance($2700+ a year for me).
IMO get whichever is more comfortable for you unless you're wanting better performance but I havn't really looked into the FZ6 or SVS 650 so I can't say.

I'd agree with you there - I like the R6 over the GSXR 600.. But I'll still take the GSXR 1000 over a new R1 (new R1 is Fuglee imho)

I think the R1 looks pretty nice but the R6 looks better. This is gonna be the first bike I've actually owned so I think I'll be happy with a 600cc for now lol..might get a liter bike some day but I just can pay the insurance on the R6 for now.

$2700 or so if I get a 2003..if I get a new one it will be $3700+. If I can get a job from a family friend at an architecture firm I'll make about 15-16k a year..not too bad for 16 and beats the hell out of part-time minimum wage lol..then I'll prolly get a 2004.

2003+ lost weight and got EFI..though it's still not a 750. Being my first true sportbike I don't really want over a 600cc..maybe in a couple years.

You wouldnt really notice any difference between a 600 and 750 really. You would on a gixxer 1000 though.
750 would have better resale though if yer buying new.
yahama are more for looks
suzuki are more for performance
honda are more for ppl that like hondas
kawasakis are middle of the road
These all change every 5 years for who is what
An old honda 900RR would have the power of a todays 600 and would be a lot cheaper and has a million parts for it. best bang for buck for used
