I hate fat people more and more every day
| Quote: | WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Even toddlers in the United States are obese, and they are not only overweight, but are showing early signs of diabetes and other diseases associated with being fat, researchers say.
To their alarm, the researchers found that sending such children to a specialist did not seem to help them get to healthier weights.
"Perhaps the epidemic of obesity can be stopped if we intervene very early with an intensive behavioral modification program," Dr. Emily Liu of Kaleida Health's Women's and Children's Hospital in Buffalo, New York, said in a weekend statement.
"Children at risk of obesity must be identified very early, even at the preschool level," said Liu, who led the study. "Obese children often have obese parents, so an effective family-based multi-factor intervention program should begin as soon as obesity is diagnosed."
Liu and colleagues looked at the medical records of 385 children seen by endocrinologists -- hormone specialists -- at the hospital between 1984 and 2002. Most of the children were already obese, defined as being in the 85th percentile for weight
The parents were instructed on proper diet and exercise for their children and were advised to meet with a dietitian. But two years later, the children were, on average, even more overweight, the study found.
"Clearly, referral to pediatric endocrinologists and dietitians is not effective in treating childhood obesity," said Liu. "An effective weight-loss program should not only focus on children, it should also include the parents and the school system. Obese children likely have obese parents. High-calorie school lunches may add to the problem."
The children also had high levels of insulin, which can lead to type-II diabetes.
"In fact, the incidence of type two diabetes in children has risen significantly in recent years, along with high prevalence of obesity," said Dr. Teresa Quattrin, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Buffalo.
Abnormally high insulin levels were found in children as young as 4 years old, the researchers told a meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Seattle.
In addition, 13 percent of 147 children tested had abnormal liver-function tests, the researchers said. These tests are an indication of a condition called fatty liver, which is common in obesity, and can in turn lead to cirrhosis.
More than 60 percent of Americans are classified as obese or overweight, which raises the risk not only of diabetes, but of heart disease and certain cancers.

I think its a combination of formula fed babies (they have a strong tendency to be much fatter), a generation of parents raised on junk food who think that its ok to feed their 1 year old french fries and coke (a phenomenon that I've witnessed far too many times), and a tendency for Americans to reward kids with food when they're on good behaviour. It creats an association between parental acceptance and food. "I want a lollipop." "No, you can't have one." "Why not, I'm being good (kid is puzzled by this break in the normal routine)." "No." "Ok then, since you're punishing me, I'll act like a little shit." The kid kicks a fit, the parent gives in and boom, you've got not only a life long association of food and acceptance, but a childhood behaviour of pushing the parent on a variable ratio schedule until they give in and give them food. I've seen it so many times in my daycare work and friends' kids.

Obesity is a plague to this country.
There are NO excuses for it. People need to wake up and get responsible.

I basically eat whatever I want, and still stay in good shape, but only because I excersise on a regular basis. That's all it takes, its not a big mystery why fat people who watch TV all day are fat.

what you fail to realize is its much easier for some people to lose weight faster than others, and some can eat whatever they want and never excersize and maintain a perfect weight, everyone is different..im 6ft 290, i play paintball like a fiend im very active and im happy, i work outside everyday in a fairly labor intensive job..some people are big, some arent..but saying you hate all fat people is just like saying you hate black people because of there skin color, same shit different flavor..i promise you if i was to lose weight, my ideal weight would make me look retarded..im naturally bigger than society deems "perfect"..
now, do i agree with some people out there who are like 500 pounds? no..if you are that over weight there is a problem, personally i was raised out-doors..ive hunted all my life and a majority of the hunting i do requires walking 20 miles on average a day, thats about 4 months out of the year..so being over weight doesnt mean that instant that they do nothing but sit in front of the TV and eat chips or junkfood..
dont judge until you have been on the other side of the line, you have no right
disclaimer- this made sense at the time, it may not, nor ever make sense to myself or anyone again..but i felt like rambling

I used to be 6'4, and 320 pounds ... I got my f*****g act together and now I'm 6'4 231.
I find the more weight I lose, the more sickened I am by fat people in general, because it's so f*****g easy =/

I was 5'3" 225, but I've been having my bones repeatedly broken and healed under tension, and now I'm 6'1" 225. I feel a lot better about myself now!

i'm scrawny. always have been. i eat pretty healthy though. for the most part.
people are so ridiculous in their eating habits.
my mom is crazy. she's depressed i think. she has a thyroid problem apparently.. i dont know what that means exactly, or how valid it is. she gained weight after having kids. she has dieted for the last 15 years, with minimal success. it all comes back. she hides chocolate in her drawers, in her car. eats target popcorn way too often (that shit is goooood. but so greasy)
so now she's having gastro something surgery. basically they go in and cut half your stomach off so you cant eat as much. it's basically starvation i think. she's really excited because all sorts of people have lost like 200 lbs doing it.
i think it's nuts. eating healthy, using all that energy, fruits, vegetables, etc... what more could it take?
i dont get it. she tells me it's because i'm skinny and have never had to deal with a "weight problem"
shrug.
