Quote:
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -- A cluster of mysterious objects that surrounded a Mexican Air Force plane, alarming the pilots and sparking a UFO scare, could be a weather phenomenon known as ball lightning, a scientist said on Friday.

The pilots grew nervous during a routine drugs surveillance flight in March when their radar detected strange objects flying nearby and an infrared camera showed 11 blobs of light, invisible to the eye, hovering or darting about their plane.

Mexico's Air Force this week released footage from the infrared camera that was shown widely on television.

As Mexican and international media published photographs of the objects, UFO Web sites saw the case as possible evidence of a new sighting of some form of extraterrestrial life.

But nuclear science researcher Julio Herrera said the blobs of light may have been nothing more than ball lightning -- glowing spheres that are little understood but often sighted near the ground during thunderstorms.

"Just as you have lightning between clouds and ground, you can also have it within the clouds and sometimes ball lightning can develop. I feel this is one of these rare events," said Herrera, based at Mexico's National Autonomous University.

"It's a very rare atmospheric phenomenon and it would be very interesting to be able to analyze all the information these pilots obtained," he told Reuters.

UFO follower Jaime Maussan said on Tuesday the objects seemed "intelligent" after they turned around to surround the plane chasing them -- but Herrera said electrical discharges in ball lightning could have been attracted to the plane as a conductor.

What a craptacular excuse.

Well, you can't expect to get the real story, can you?

Like I said before, maybe 20 years from now we will get to see the funky new planes our tax dollars are funding.

I think the Stealth fighter explanation was probably a lot closer to the truth...

Blaming it on Ronald McDonald would have been more realistic than lightning.

We were flying 11 stealth fighters at once? I don't understand how this excuse is any more believable than the ball lightning one.

I think it's a lot closer to the truth.

There probably is something to the argument that it was the government testing aircraft. It's unlikely they would release the entire story to the public though.

Correct.. the part I don't get is the part where they fly close to the planes and tail them for a bit. I thought test flights were supposed to take place in areas where you were a) isolated b) on your own turf so you could rapidly deploy a recovery in the event it was needed.

Why were we flying experimental aircraft over Mexican airspace, again?

because i doubt very seriously it was anything of ours if it was said "plane", i would go along with it being a plane of ours alot more if it was sighted in AZ or NM alot more than mexico =p

I honestly have no idea, Nah. I don't even know for sure that those were our planes. I just find that a bit more likely than aliens.

The Hitchhikers Guide had a good passage on how UFO's are so easily dismissed.

They have a "sombody elese problem" field generator that allows you to see it but then instantly dismis it.

The mind is so willing to buy the "S.E.P." filed that it can be powered off a 9 volt battery.

I'll have to find that passage, fricking hystarical.

Quote:
Somebody Else's Problem field

(Redirected from SEP field)

The SEP field is a fictional technology from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy" by Douglas Adams. It is a cheaper alternative to an invisibility field.

The letters stand for "Somebody Else's Problem". An SEP field can be erected on, or projected around a bizarre and unbelievable scene so that the unconscious minds of the observers instantly abdicate responsibility for its existence, assert that it's "somebody else's problem", and therefore don't perceive it at all. The primary example of this was given in the third book Life, the Universe and Everything, when a UFO (A spaceship powered by the Bistromathic drive owned by the fictional character Slartibartfast) landed in the middle of a cricket ground during a match, and the assembled crowd failed to notice it.

The SEP field requires much less energy than a normal invisibility field, due to the natural propensity of humans to see things as Somebody Else's Problem.

If I see a sign that says "Deadly force permitted", I think I'd turn around. That's how you know they're serious.

Shit, if they are anything like us, and they have to be, we can kiss ownership of this planet goodbye.

I've been inside fences at an army base that says that... the security guard when patting me down said something about "Well you know how us Greeks are". I was scared.
