Apparently Turkey voted against (so far) allowing us to base troops there for our war on Iraq, turning down an offered thirty billion dollars in aid. It strikes me that that's a lot of damn money. There are about 125 million tax returns filed in the US every year - that's $240 per tax return, just to let our troops stand on the ground in Turkey. Not counting actually paying those troops, or feeding and supplying them, or getting them there, or paying for the weapons, or buying the support of any of the dozens of other countries we've had to give concessions to, or undoing the damage after the war is over. And not only that, but it wasn't enough to get them to vote for it Smile

It strikes me that if you pay taxes, you can expect this war to cost you, personally, on the order of a few thousand dollars. I guess if it actually dramatically decreases our chance of being killed by terrorists (rather than increasing it), it's money well spent. But it's still a lot of damn money.

We offered them $30 billion? I'm gonna agree, that seems like a shitload of money just for being there. Seems like it'd be cheaper to just take over Turkey, THEN base troops there for Iraq ;p

I think we should just fly over their capital with a wing of F-22's with a sign that says 'Now its free, Thx.'

I think it all boils down to the US not wanting Turkey to go into Iraq, because of the Kurds there. The US is afraid that a fight might break out between the two over the Northern oil fields and any weapons left behind by the Iraqi's. Turkey doesn't want the Kurds to get those weapons, then use them against Turkey.

Yeah this 'war' is getting expensive, and it hasn't even started yet! Major bummer we're reduced to bribing countries now... did anybody else see how the UN vote looks to be split? The 3 African and 3 South American countries are with us while France, Germany, and Russia are against us.

Gee... the lack of 'civilized' support speaks volumes.

only 6 billion was in outright cash grants

24 billion was loan guarantees, which are spread out over time and quite different from cash grants

And your math on how much it costs the average person is way off. You are leaving out all other ways the government receives money, like tariffs and and the taxation of everything else!

Maybe they could offer Hussein the same amount of money to leave and never come back... then assasinate him when he gets where he's going.

don"t we have several bases there? I know my ex is in turkey and he is in the air force. We were already moving troops over there when things began to look sketchy.

I think the base in Turkey is a NATO base.

It's one thing to have a NATO advance post there. It's something completely different to use the country's own resources to stage a major land invasion.

Well, you are attacking Iraq, ostensibly to help foster democracy in the region, yet God forbid, when a country makes a democratic decision, which in this case happens to be not to let your troops through, you get bent out of shape and start whining like little hyporcitical b*****s.
