Don't you live in Florida Paco, hurricane alley?

I agree that people need to accept the risks if they live in areas prone to natural disasters (flood, hurricane, tornado, etc). They should obtain proper insurance (PRIVATE not gov't handouts) and build structurally sound housing. However this hit mostly 3rd world areas, where the people are so poor they do not have the resources available. You can still mourn the loss of life and feel badly for them. This earthquake was a once a century event as well, a cataclysmic catostrophe - not your typical natural disaster to be expected, even in high risk areas.

I pity these people a lot more than the idiots in Florida. Here in America we do have the resources to protect ourselves, and if you can't afford it move your trailer to Montana or somewhere safe from natural disasters.

Events like this are very rare. In fact, thousands of lives could have been saved if there was a warning system for the tsunamis. There isn't a warning system in place, because this is really rare.

Considering 70% of the earth's surface is ocean, I'm not quite sure how you can expect no one to live near it.

Where do you live Paco? I'm trying to think of states that aren't prone to either earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, or blizzards. I wouldn't want to accidently be sympathetic if you were ever impacted by a natural disaster.

Colorado doesn't have many problems in the way of natural disasters besides a rare tornado, and focus on the family.

Reminds me of Sam Kineson's old routine (sp?):

Quote:
You want to stop world hunger? Stop sending these people food. Don't send these people another bite, folks. You want to send themsomething, you want to help? Send them U-Hauls. Send them U- Hauls, some luggage, send them a guy out there who says, 'Hey, we been driving out here every day with your food, for, like, the last thirty or forty years, and we were driving out here today across the desert, and it occurred to us that there wouldn't BE world hunger, if you people would LIVE WHERE THE FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT! YOU LIVE IN A f*****g DESERT! NOTHING GROWS OUT HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW OUT HERE! YOU SEE THIS? HUH? THIS IS SAND. KNOW WHAT IT'S GONNA BE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW? IT'S GONNA BE SAND! YOU LIVE IN A f*****g DESERT! GET YOUR STUFF, GET YOUR SHIT, WE'LL MAKE ONE TRIP, WE'LL TAKE YOU TO WHERE THE FOOD IS! WE HAVE DESERTS IN AMERICA -- WE JUST DON'T LIVE IN THEM, a******s!"

Although realistically, you've got whole countries that are prone to flooding every decade or so. It's not like they can just leave, unless say you're offering to let a million or so camp out in your backyard or something.

build some big factories in the Nevada desert and offer to bring their cheap labor over for free and lower the minimum wage to 2.50$. They'd still be better off and we could raise our gnp.

The argument about Tsunami warning systems in the Indian ocean is basically: You'd have to man it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for anywhere up to 200+ years for there to be a payout.

Tsunami's are MUCH more common along the pacific rim, where these detection systems exist.

With all that said, India and a few other nations hardest hit by this event are looking into lower cost, less efficient warning systems, and at least setting up an early warning infrastructure in place that can be used for multiple types of predictable disasters (Typhoons, tsunami's, etc).

The USGS detected the earthquake and estimated it's magnitude around 8.0 within 15 minutes of the event. Even that miscalculated warning could have been enough to save tens of thousands of lives, conceivably. The USGS is quoted as basically saying 'We didn't have anyone to call.'

Wow, you're quickly becoming the biggest a*****e on this board. Congratulations.

As has been said before, you can't really blame these people for not having insurance and for living where they are. It's called poverty. They don't have a choice, and they are forced to live there in order to meak out a living and survive.

Would you feel the same way if some rare tragedy occured in California or Florida, because, hey, they live near the coast so they should have expected it? Come on, not even you and Kbarr would be that callous.

did he bring the comet that killed the dinosaurs or is it just the sea, locusts, and fire?

id watch it

but anyway f**k you all for posting this crap in this thread.. have you no decency?

Like I give a shit about what anyone thinks of me, least of all you. Let me clue you in, on your pick and choose sympathies adventure. While you choose to recognize this horrible event, you ignore the rest of the world's daily hell on earth events. All caused by people, and oddly enough, not mother nature. I guess it's PC to say something when something like a flood, earthquake, whatever you want to use as an example within the realm of natural mishaps, but when it comes to the evil that men do, you turn a blind eye? Sure, we can talk about this, as something in the news, but in kind, you can find stories about how hellish it is to live in North Korea, or take your pick of any 5 shitholes in Africa that aren't killing hundreds/thousands per day because of one man's desires. Considering this is RP, we say whatever the f**k we want. We're not specifically focused on how s****y life in these third world countries are. So do you feel better calling me an a*****e because I say something you don't like? That's fine by me.

There is a small difference between acknowledging that there are horrible things that happen in the world everday this tsunami is just one of many and saying that they had it coming because they live near the sea, or they are Muslim. No one said you had to obsess over the suffering of everyone. You shouldn't. But if you can't acknowledge the fact that it might be a good thing if this didn't happen, well, people would disagree, including the families of the Americans vacationing there that are dead or missing.

You're saying that these people deserve their suffering, and people are getting offended by that. Don't be surprised. If you don't care what people think, spare us the defense.

I guess it has something to do with an innate feeling to care about the wellfare of other people?

I really couldn't care less. The only time I feel anything for someone being killed is family/friend or someone in the Military. I'm not jumping for joy that they died or anything but I don't care either way. Maybe a lot of it has to do with whether or not you believe in God(or whoever) and if there is an afterlife or not? I never get that "innate feeling to care".

Why do I care if people I don't know die? On the most selfish level, it makes one aware that this could happen to you too. I had similar feelings after 9/11, oddly enough, no one said those feelings were somehow not natural to have. Just like it is possible that someone will fly a plane into a buliding that you happen to be in, it is possible that a natural disaster will kill you or your friends and family.

Then again, some of you seem to think that a single thread on this seems to indicate an obsession on the (selected) misery of some. I don't think anyone is losing sleep about this (maybe Rasil, who is directly affected by this), but I don't see why thinking about this disaster for a minute is such an unnatural thing to do.
