The "shsha" is probably one of the more fascinating of all the Russian letters.
It's pronounced both as "ssshya" in Moscow, and "shcha" in Petersburg and Ukraine.
For an English equivalent, say "spanish sherry" very quickly and you'll hit the right sound for the Muscovite pronunciation, say "fresh cheese for the Ukrainian pronunciation.

Anyone else find themselves saying these things to themselves or was it just me?

If you were speaking fluid English you would never pause between the two words. The sound would be an elongated "sh" sound which is precisely the point of the exercise
