A ONE-YEAR-OLD boy was killed when his father, who was allegedly high on drugs, leaped while carrying him from a footbridge in Quezon City Friday.
Nestor Silang Jr. died while undergoing treatment due to severe head injuries, while his father Nestor Sr. suffered a broken limb.
The hostage drama began at 1 p.m. at the 20-foot high footbridge located near Sandiganbayan on Commonwealth Avenue when Nestor tiptoed and ran atop the steel overpass.
He occasionally dangled his son to the horror of witnesses in the area, including his wife Herminia, 35, of Kalapati Street, Barangay Commonwealth.
For almost 30 minutes, a woman firefighter tried to negotiate with Silang to free the child but failed. Nestor made no demands and refused to talk to anyone although he remained firm on not giving away his son.
Police, firefighters and members of the Metro Manila Development Authority immediately arrived in the area.
The commotion ended around 2:40 p.m. when Silang jumped off the footbridge and seemed to have deliberately missed the police blanket that was supposed to catch him and the baby.
Police said Silang landed on the pavement on his feet, but he apparently was not able to hold on to his son, causing the child's head to hit the ground.
Silang was mobbed by an angry crowd upon his landing, while the baby was rushed to the hospital where he died later.

Sad. One of those idiots just watching the scene couldn't have attempted to move and catch the kid? Was he tossed all that far away from the probably near 50+ authorities below? NO I'm not trying to find any fault in anyone else, but him. Just sad.
