Anyone mind sharing their opinions on the game? I haven’t played an online game in ages. After EQ I tried some new games, but nothing was fun. I guess my main problem is I can’t stand the whole “level grind” aspect involved in 90% of MMOG’s .. After EQ I just can’t take it anymore.

Is FFXI fun? Or is it another EQ clone? Kill, kill, level, level, try not to fall behind your friends because if you do, you can’t play with them anymore type deal.

There is some level treadmilling in this game (as any MMORPG), but there are plenty of other things going on to keep you from getting bored.

Typically you'll be doing quests a lot in the beginning, for money and for rank. You'll probably solo from 1-10, and start grouping after that. Groups are easy to get if you know what zone to go to. This game is nice because you can change jobs (you will need to for subjobbing) which lets you play as a different class for a while if you get bored. The game has lots of questing and the quest rewards are much better than they were in EQ (for lower levels).

I think leveling is faster in this game than EQ but the experience penalty for death is harsher at lower levels. There is no SoW either, so you have to be a bit more careful. You'll likely end up with 2+ classes that you play with your character, 1 to get the subjob quest done, 1 for a subjob, and 1 advanced job. The level cap (for jobs) is 70 right now, so there's plenty to do to max your level if you want to.

Being an ex-EQ'r i like this game. This game has the same spirit of meeting new people and getting groups like EQ did around the Kunark release.

Cool, thanks for the reply. I think i'm going to pick it up tomorrow when I do some other x-mas shopping.

2 questions.

1) I hear you can play this game with a controler (ps2 with adaptor and other gamepads) .. How does this work out? Can you easily do everything with a game pad, just need keyboard to chat?

2) I'd like to play this on my laptop, i'll be out of town for next few weeks .. away from my desktop. Not sure If it will run ok or not. I did the benchmark from playonline.com, but the program doesn't really tell you what the numbers mean.

Low - 4884
High - 3338

Will this be good enough?

Thanks!

This game requires much less system performance than EQ did, that's for damn sure. From a laptop's perspective, unless you have a pretty nice vid card and at least 512 ram, I wouldn't reccomend it however. Potsnu has a laptop, see if he can answer this for you :p I run it on a ghetto desktop, but it works.

cool thanks. Laptop is rather new.

P4-3.0ghz - 800MHZ FSB w/ Hyperthreading
1 gig PC3200
Radeon 9600 Pro 128 MB

I think it will be fine, benchmark ran ok, didn't chug or anything. Just wasn't sure what the result numbers mean.

everyone on the same server or spread out? Someone hook me up with a worldpass =D

s***w Ifrit, come to Bismarck!

Is this the same Malik I grew up with? Poopie pants?

1) I play with a gamepad, it works great. I can't stand the keyboard. I only use the keyboard for chatting and the use of macros.

2) I play on a labtop, 2.4ghz, and it runs amazing. Pretty smooth, barely any video lag.

The level grind is not that bad, as most people say. In EQ, the Exp required was exponential from 30+. The exp you gained was significantly less, relative to the rise in exp required. In FFXI, the exp system is Linear. If you're lvl 1, an Even con gives you 100 exp. If you're lvl 75, an Even con gives you 100 exp as well. Even though the Exp required is exponential, you get the same Rate of exp at ANY level. So I'm lvl 40 right now, and I still gain 200+ exp a kill, which isn't too bad. Even though I need 7k a lvl, you can still make 2-3 lvls a Night.

A lot of people complain about how hard it is to level. You're clueless. Get the hang of the game, and lvling is a breeze. With support, lvling is a joke. I've had numerous Thf's complain how difficult it was to lvl. If you're using Dagger, that's your problem. Most Thf's use Hand to Hand at the beginning, and plow through 1-15. To give you an indication, it took me over a month to hit lvl 30 with my Warrior. It took me 1 week to hit 30 with my Dragoon, so the exp grind is not bad at all. Just get past the learning curve, and you'll start to appreciate the game.

The game has dynamic elements that I really enjoy. It really makes me feel I'm living in a constantly evolving world. When night falls, the city lights up. The campsites of monsters also light up. If you're #1 in Conquest, you have the travelling circus in your town. If you're #3, you begin to see outposts disappearing. During Hallowen, Square had events with Pumpkin masks and Bat staffs. Its Christmas time, and the towns are filled with colourful Christmas trees.

Yup, that be me. I still have those pants too If Sony didn’t delete my character. They gotta be like a collector item or something Wink

Thanks for the post. The game really sounds cool. I like how you can kick back and play with a game pad. Hate being stuck to the keyboard all the time.

Gonna try to pick up the game tomorrow. Thinking of starting out as a white mage. I want to easily get groups, plus I always enjoyed playing a cleric when I had to bot one for the guild in EQ. Seems like that might be hard to start out though. Can white mages still solo at low levels, or would I have to group from the start?

K, I got the game. Patching now. Man what an install process. 5-CDs, a ton of registration shit, and now a patch from hell.. taking hours even on cable.

Haven't played yet, but 2 things have impressed me so far.

1) A real game manual. Haven't seen one of these in ages Wink

2) Game supports 1440x900 .. whoo.. That's the reso on my 17" notebook.

oh well, back to listening to old school FF music while it patches. lol

I'm a mediocre gime now too. After 15min of doing the create/delete character trick, Ifrit is all I could get that had ppl I know.

Gimme a worldpass for your server and some starting Gil and i'll join ya Pots Smile

Otherwise i'm "Spork" on Ifrit.. W.Mage. Feel free to send your gil and newbie item donations to that character, because I suck at this game. lol

Well, I’ve had the game for like 4 days now.. I like it! Well, at least so far.. not sure what the end game is like.

One thing that sucks is the first 10 levels you pretty much have to solo.. group exp sucks. Man, L9 to L11 sucked to grind out as a solo white mage. But I started grouping tonight, got to L12.. had a blast.

The auction house and delivery system is the greatest thing I’ve seen in a MMOG. f**k east commons / bazaar, the auction house owns it hands down. So easy to use, built in price checks (bid history).. just put your item up for auction, pay a 1-5 gil fee, and forget about it, it sells, you’ll find the money at your house. Also, I think it’s cool that monsters really don’t drop any “junk”. Pretty much everything you find has a use to some other player and can be sold at auction.

First day of playing FFXI I was like, wtf, I’m so poor, the monsters don’t drop anything worth while!! How do you make money!?!? Then I found the auction house, now a few days later I have 25k+ GIL, and I just got done buying my L12 armor set, weapon, and spells.

Death penalty isn’t bad. Sucks if you lose your level, but that’s about it.. No showing up at your bind point naked trying to find people to help you do a CR.

Downtime = Very little. Our party tonight would get some big pulls.. even when the whole party was OOM and low on health it still only took less than 1 min to be back full and fighting.. I like that.

So far I think the game is cool.. having fun. If anyone here around my level wants to group up, send me a tell.

Spork – L12 White Mage

Aye I agree , losing your level can suck but its very rare that you will die enough of time to lose oyur level..well except if you just had it.
