Kerry Widens Lead Over Bush in New Jersey, Poll Shows (Update1)

Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry widened his lead over President George W. Bush to 13 percentage points among voters in New Jersey following last week's party convention, according to a poll by Quinnipiac University.

Kerry, a four-term Massachusetts senator, leads Bush 49 percent to 36 percent in New Jersey, with independent candidate Ralph Nader garnering the support of 6 percent, according to the Hamden, Connecticut-based university. Kerry's advantage has increased from a 46 percent to 40 percent lead prior to the Democratic Party convention in Boston.

``In New Jersey, at least, Senator Kerry is ahead in the commander-in-chief match-up,'' said Clay Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, in a statement posted on the university's Web site. ``This is the kind of lead you expect a Democratic candidate to have in Democratic New Jersey.''

Former Vice President Al Gore carried New Jersey in the 2000 presidential election, beating Bush by 16 percent. Kerry had a narrower edge in the 17 states that are closely contested by the two campaigns, leading Bush 49 percent to 42 percent a separate survey of registered voters released yesterday by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. The poll by Poughkeepsie, New York-based Marist is statistically the same as the previous survey in July.

Nationwide, the Marist poll of 839 registered voters surveyed July 30 to Aug. 2 showed Kerry capturing 45 percent of the vote and Bush with 44 percent, within the poll's 3.5 percent margin of error. A USA Today/CNN/Gallup nationwide poll of 763 ``likely'' voters showed Bush leading Kerry 50 percent to 46 percent. Gallup's survey has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The margin of error for the Quinnipiac poll is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The university surveyed 996 registered voters in New Jersey between July 30 and Aug. 2. About a third of registered voters did not participate in the 2000 election.
