that's great, but the people with degrees don't want to work unskilled factory work making 1/6th what they did before Bush took office. I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to.

I hope you realize that factories are automated nowadays. Factory automation is a big industry requiring educated people, which you are not.

I realize that pointing out the stupidity of the dude, this particular time made me chuckle.."which you are not." just struck a chord. Thnx sir!

b******t. And, don't even try to claim that the domestic tech industry hasn't been severely hurt by outsourcing. And while we're on the topic I don't like getting f*****g customer service from Indochina, the Philippines, or South America when someone makes a fraudulent charge to my credit card or my computer breaks.

I'm a technical recruiter. Business is booming. It feels like 98 moving into 99. Contractor rates and salaries are going up, candidates are getting snapped up in a matter of days/weeks instead of months. It started to pick up late last year and has been steadily increasing.

I have a desk job at a factory that produces furniture. It's automated to an extent, but you still need someone there to run the machine. They don't have arms that grab shit off a pile and throw it in.

Pretty soon it won't. People need to adapt or die. It's no one elses job to make sure you're not getting f*****g over but your own. If your job dissapeared I guarantee you could of seen it coming and found a better profession before hand. But instead you chose not to, then bitched when you lost it. Boo f*****g hoo. If you lost your job for any reason other than racial or **** prejudice, or something similair, then I couldn't f*****g care less.

Proof positive Kireol doesn't have the slightest grasp on economics and is just looking to paint his soapbox a little more red, white and blue.

Not sure if you're joking , but that's the colloquial term for Pankrat's job. You basically use your contacts to find people at one company who you can induce to go work for one of your clients instead, pocketing a fairly hefty commision in the process. It's a hard job, but you can make big bucks if you're good.
How many calls you get from headhunters is a pretty good indication of how the economy is doing. One ever week or two is booming, one a month or so is strong, one every three months is sputtering along, anything less is dead.

Yes, but factories need much fewer people and produce much less waste to produce the same amount of output than they did just 10 years ago.

Some factors go up, some go down.
http://www.freep.com/news/latestnews/pm20956_20040803.htm
Consumer spending, which accounts for 2/3 of our economic activity, drops by the largest amount in three years. Wages were also unexpectedly flat, again to the surprise of 'experts.' Unemployment still hasn't gone anywhere, either.
We're just muddling along, Bush and his admin don't have a handle on this yet (and may not ever).

My take on the tech econmy as a "headhunter". I started recruiting Oct 97, 98 was my first full year doing it - 98 things were humming right along and the pace picked up all year. 99 the whole .com thing started going crazy. By the end of 99 hiring was at a frenzied pace. The first 3 quarters of 2000 was the peak of the .com bubble - it was just a feeding frenzy. You could call people about a job and if it was more than 10 miles from their house they might hang up on you (I was mainly recruiting Silicon Valley/SF Bay Area).
Everyone had multiple offers and picked and chose what and where they wanted to work - it was like musical chairs for a lot of companies. Around Sept/Oct things started to slow down. The whole election mess put the brakes on big time, VC money was drying up fast and the bubble started to burts. By mid 2001 tech was floundering, there was a glut of equipment and foreign talent (Clinton administration and all the tech co's pushed hard to raise the H1B cap and loosen restrictions on H1 employees).
When Sept 11 happened, everything stopped. The tech economy went from a mild recession to a full flung depression. By early 2002 probably half of my old clients were gone and no one was hiring. 2002 was the worst, not sure how we survived (the agency I work for).
Early 2003 started to show signs of life but it sputterred and started and stopped. Mid 2003 things were picking up, but it was just a gradual kind of thing. By late 2003, business was solid, job orders were steady.
2004 started off nice and has been picking up month by month. For the first time in a long time in July, multiple old clients have called us out of the blue with job orders. Recruiting in 03 used to talk to people that had been out of work for a year or longer all the time. Now, the majority of the talent I talk to has multiple opportunities they are working simultaneously - and I have lost quite a few to competing offers because some of my clients are still in "recession mode" - ie they don't move quick enough.
Granted - I work the higher end of the tech jobs, and there are still alot of people out there looking for work and it's also regional. Some areas of the country are doing much better than others. But overall the activity level is steadily increasing, the best people are getting snapped up quickly, compensation is moving back up (it was 2/3 - 1/2 of what it was, which meant that guys who used to make 100/hr were now making 60 or 50, however now they are moving back up to 65-70-75, etc.).
So there you have 1 recruiters view of the tech economy - as you can imagine in my job I talk to alot of people.
